It’s official! The Veldt has returned!

“For black artists, doing anything outside of the bubble, beyond what’s derivative of what white kids are doing, being able to express yourself honestly, is not celebrated at all. So when I heard these guys, it gave me confidence.”
— Grammy Award winning producer Doc McKinney (The Weeknd, Drake, Estherio)

In March 2016, we released to critical-acclaim The Shocking Fuzz of Your Electric Fur: The Drake Equation on the UK label Leonard Skully Records. This latest EP serves to mark the band's re-emergence and will be followed by another full album of original material on our Resurrection Hymns LP out early next year. Indeed, for us veteran musicians and passionate noise technicians, The Shocking Fuzz of Your Electric Fur marks a new beginning.

The album has sparked interest all around the world: reigniting a fan base of an earlier iteration of the Veldt founded by Identical twins, Daniel and Danny Chavis, joined by long-time collaborator and Japanese native Hayato Nakao as well as Marie Cochrane on vocals. The first single is the emotionally wrought Sanctified, a ballad that perfectly captures the lush sound of Danny’s screeching guitars and decibel-breaking distortion, along with Daniel’s soulful wail, Hayato Nakao’s deep bass grooves and guitar feedback, and Marie Cochrane as guest female vocals.  The track serves as the perfect re-introduction to The Veldt’s rebirth. Our title The Shocking Fuzz of Your Electric Fur was borrowed from an E. E. Cummings’ poem. Its raging sound was influenced equally by the emotional soul of Marvin Gaye, free jazz warriors Sun Ra and Pharaoh Sanders, various Drake hip-hop tracks, and the twins’ own fertile electric imagination.

“The Veldt are a unique and singular, musical proposition - authentic American soul music, without post-modern irony, without cliché. If the Velvet Underground had left the Factory and toured with STAX ... They are Kane's kissing kousins.”
— Rudy Tambala (A.R. Kane)

Our music is loud, exploring color, space, sensuality and beat driven melodies with rhythmic and dynamic tension. Daniel's falsetto vocals cast a contrast upon the wall of sound created by Danny's heavy rock dreamscape guitar, Hayato's pounding and licentious beats and Marie’s sweet, sultry voice to pepper in an angelic presence.

Although The Veldt had signed to two major labels after leaving Mercury Records in 1995, the brothers decided to remain indie and self-released their 2008 album White Music for Black People.

“The major labels were always trying to get us to change our sound, our look or both,” Daniel laughs. “But, we had no interest in being the next Lenny Kravitz or Tony! Toni! Toné!  Unfortunately, not everyone shared our vision. We weren’t trying to be rock stars, we just want to play our music and pay our rent.”

As well as Robin Guthrie and A.R. Kane, they have collaborated with TV On The Radio, Mos Def and Lady Miss Kier (Deee-Lite), and have shared the stage with My Bloody Valentine, The Pixies, Cocteau Twins, Manic Street Preachers, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Oasis, Living Colour, and Public Enemy, among others.

With our new EP, the band opened for The Brian Jonestown Massacre in Boston, Philadelphia and New York to sold out crowds.  And now, The Veldt has been invited to play the big stages of The Reverence Festival in Portugal on September 10th, The Psych Fest in Liverpool on September 23rd, and the Levitation Festival in France on September 16/17th. HOWEVER, the fees we have been offered are nowhere near what we need to fly to and from NYC and to sustain ourselves within the UK and EU for an entire month.

Here is where YOU come in! Help get our music out there: The Veldt and YOU. As pioneers of what is now called the ‘shoegaze’ scene, WE ARE A POOR, HARD-WORKING AMERICAN BAND that has never given up on our dreams. Help us show the world that it is possible to take our beautiful music abroad and beyond.

“With Danny’s enveloping hooks, Daniel’s swooning falsetto... the new songs invite paradoxical praise: serenely assaultive, vertiginously soothing”
