The eXvangelicals Documentary

Donation protected

The eXvangelicalsis an in-development documentary by filmmaker andformer Evangelical Pastor Andy Herndon, that will tell the story of the emergence of the eXvangelical community, those who have left Conservative Evangelical Protestant Christianity behind.

Those who identify as eXvangelical can not be clearly defined as one race, gender, sexual orientation, socio economic status or anything else. The commonality in this community is they were all once a part of Evangelical Christianity and at some point they left it behind and now identify as eXvangelical.

eXvangelicals do not have a set of beliefs or a creed. They run the gambit between those who left for progressive forms of Christian expression to agnostics or atheists and everything in between.

Taking inspiration from documentarians Ava DuVernay and Michael Moore and the A&E docuseries Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath,The eXvangelicalswill tell the story of the emergence of the eXvangelical community and how it is shaping culture as they press back against their former culture system of beliefs.

The eXvangelical community has been featured on the recent CBS News Special, Deconstructing My Religion, along with national coverageinNewsweek and The Guardian.

The hashtags #exvangelical, #emptythepews and #christianaltfacts are used regularly by the eXvangelical community and are often trending on Twitter and Instagram.

Andy will talk with eXvangelicals of all backgrounds, exploring the effects of strict conservative beliefs, psychological abuse, purity culture, rapture and end time theology, racism, homophobia, chauvinism, sexual abuse and exploitation, authoritarianism and more.  We’ll find out what brought eXvangelicals to Evangelicalism in the first place. What did their conversion look like? What were the practices and beliefs that began their disillusionment with Evangelicalism? What was the catalyst to their departure from Evangelicalism? How did they deal with the sense of loss of identity and community? And finally look at what are eXvangelicals doing now after leaving Evangelicalism.

Director Andy Herndon was a Southern Baptist Evangelical Pastor for 15 years. In 2017 he left full time vocational ministry, the church and Evangelical Christianity behind. His love of story telling and film brought him to the creative gem of Ashland, Oregon where he enrolled in the Digital Cinema Program of Southern Oregon University full time. Along with school, since leaving full time vocational ministry, Andy has become an associate producer and video editor for an in-development reality show, a creative consultant for the Ashland New Plays Festival and has directed several shorts and local political ads. He now resides in Southern Oregon with his wife, three children and their two dogs.
