The Lighthouse for Asylees
Tax deductible
Thanks to the volunteer efforts of more than 100 people, The Lighthouse for asylees welcomed its first guests on Saturday, March 4, 2017 - five individuals from Ethiopia, Burkina Faso, Syria and Honduras moved in and made The Lighthouse their first home in the United States!
Since that time, more than 75 people from 22 different countries have found refuge at the Lighthouse.* The generosity of our donors makes it possible for us to provide our guests with cell phones, internet access, food, clothing, transportation, language classes, eyeglasses, toiletries, and much more. We have had guests as young as 18 months, and as old as 55.
The Lighthouse provides temporary housing for post-release individuals who were forced to flee persecution in their home countries due to race, religion, nationality, political opinion, or membership in a particular social group, and who have been released from one of four correctional facilities in NJ. Before arriving at the Lighthouse, our guests have spent upwards of six months to more than a year languishing in detention, even though they have never committed a crime.
The Lighthouse is a partnership between Church of the Incarnation and First Friends of NY and NJ , whose mission is to uphold the inherent dignity and humanity of detained immigrants and asylum seekers by providing compassion and hope through volunteer visitation, resettlement assistance and advocacy.
Please make a tax-deductible donation to The Lighthouse today. Your generosity will transform lives and provide hope and services to our guests as they establish themselves in their new country.
*Our guests have come from Syria, Iran, Burkina Faso, Honduras, Guatemala, Cameroon, Togo, Somalia, Mexico, Jamaica, Egypt, Jordan, Chad, Djibouti, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, El Salvador, Uganda, Nigeria, Angola, Haiti, and Ethiopia.
