The #MeToo Project
Tax deductible
The #MeToo Project is a part of The Uplift Series dedicated to the support for those who have experienced sexual assault or rape in the Bay Area.
Founded in 1971, BAWAR was the first rape crisis center in the country. It was founded with the two-part goal of establishing a place where survivors of sexual violence could receive the quality counseling and advocacy they need, and to provide community education around these issues.
Although their name is Bay Area Women Against Rape, we serve anyone affected by sexual violence. BAWAR defines sexual violence by the narratives of the survivors who experienced the violence. They are here to believe and validate the community they serve in a trauma-informed, culturally appropriate and accessible way.
Their services include:
a 24-hour crisis line for survivors of sexual violence and their support people (English and Spanish)
24-hour on call service for hospital and police report accompaniments
Court accompaniments
Peer counseling (English and Spanish)
Clinical counseling
Support groups
Training for police, medical personnel, teachers/school administrators, community organizations, etc.
Community outreach
Latinx program
Impact letters
Sexually Exploited Minors and At-Risk Youth program
LGBTQIA+ program
College Campus Outreach and Advocacy
Three Sexual Assault Counselor Certification trainings per year (these prepare their volunteers to work on our hotline and in person accompaniment services)
All of their services are free and confidential.
