The International Youth Leadership Institute (IYLI) is raising money to provide travel scholarships for two 5-week long journeys for Black and Latino youth students travel to Senegal (July 13th to August 9th) and Mexico (July 21st to August 16th).
HOW WILL THE FUNDS BE USED:
Funds will be used to cover costs for two separate groups of Black and Latino students each participating in concurrent 5-week programs. For the Senegal program there are 8 New York City based students and 8 Dakar based students along with 2 US group leaders and 2 Senegalese group leaders. For the Mexico program there are 8 New York City based students and 4 group leaders. Total of 32 people including airfare, admissions to museums, local transportation, lodging, food, etc.
ABOUT IYLI:
Since 1989, IYLI has made it possible for more than 500 Black and Latino underserved youth to study in over 40 overseas programs in Latin America, Caribbean, Africa, and Europe at no or low-costs. Through their international experiences students gain academic skills and college preparation. Students are exposed to professionals working overseas which allows them to develop an awareness of international education and career opportunities. They also develop cultural sensitivity, a sense of confidence, and understanding of the world around them, including fighting negative stereotypes about travel.
OVER THE YEARS IYLI HAS MADE AN IMPACT:• Raised money over the last 10 years for international study scholarships for Black and Latino youth.
• Provided travel and academic scholarships to 400 students.
• Became funding model for a multi-million dollar initiative under the Dewitt-Wallace/Youth Travel Enrichment Fund to expand opportunities for students of color to experience international travel.
• 92% of alumni have gone on to attend postsecondary institutions in more than 50 institutions in 14 states; including Columbia, Yale, Howard, NYU, Brown University.
• Recipients of numerous scholarships including Gates Millennium Scholarship, Woodrow Wilson Fellowship, Fulbright, and Thomas Watson Fellowship.
