The pregnancy leading up to the birth of our third child was a rough one to be sure. Lots of stress and learning new medical terms. In the end, though, what we ended up with was a wonderful girl named Julia Grace.
To give Julia the best care she could receive, her mother and father decided that it would be best to relocate to Boston for her birth and subsequent surgery for bladder exstrophy, a condition where the bladder forms outside of the body. The good news is that surgery went perfectly thanks to the great team at Boston Children’s Hospital.
The bad news is that bladder exstrophy wasn’t Julia’s only issue. In fact, it was caused by another issue called focal dermal hypoplasia. This is an incredibly rare condition that at its core impacts her skin, but that can cause a number of other problems as well.
And so we find ourselves needing to head back to Boston for more surgery. Last time, we left our two older daughters - Kaitlyn and Claire - behind with family to finish up school. This was easily one of the most difficult things we have ever experienced, and not something we wanted to put either them or us through again.
We also had the good fortune of having sold our house right before Julia was born, leaving us mortgage free for the duration of our stay in Boston. This - along with a very generous donation from a friend of the family - allowed us to afford an apartment near the hospital.
This time, though, everything is different. We are taking Kaitlyn and Claire with us, as none of us can bear to be away from each other, even just for a month. We are not selling our house, so will have a mortgage to pay. And we do not want to press our friend of the family to help us again after such an amazing gift the last time.
So we are in need of your assistance. We hope you can find it in your heart to help Julia not just get the care she needs, but stay surrounded by the love she deserves.
Thank you,
Sean, Tori, Kaitlyn, Claire, and Julia
