To Thrive: LGBTQ in Kingston, JA
Donation protected
As a young person I came to realize my work in the world through art. I come from a lineage of people who have an understanding of their ancestral practice and power that lies within the history of their spirituality. My practice of musicianship, curation and teaching is a direct reflection of the intention my elders invested in, ensuring my future and the future’s I hold and guide are nurtured in a holistic sense.
Personally this has made me realize the importance of documenting our history as marginalized communities, to preserve our narratives and offer an archived experience for intergenerational exchange between youth and elders.
In October, 2015- I was chosen as the next Flying It Forward ticket recipient from Jet Blue Airlines. On my travels I went from Seattle to Kingston, Jamaica with the intent of documenting the experiences of LGBTQ young people from all walks of life.
After a first hand experience of seeing and feeling the inhumane treatment of young LGBTQ folks in Kingston, I realized the urgency to provide direct support through building a sustainable mentorship program that could potentially save lives. Through a monetary donation we will be able to provide support with basic human necessities such as food, shelter, clothing and mentorship around job/vocational training and or relocation.
Our goal is to raise a total of $60,000. $50,000 will be used to provide on the ground direct support for a total of 10 young people for 12 months, who are facing adverse and unsafe situations due to their sexual orientation.
$3,000 will be used to support administrative responsibilities regarding funding and distribution. $7,000 to be allocated to 1 person on the ground distributing funds and providing direct advocacy to navigate a number of options that fit best to support said young person.
How that breaks down--
$50,000 / 12 months = $4,166.66
$4,166/ 10 Young People= $416.66/per young person
$10,000/ Admin + 1 person on the ground providing direct support for 12 months
It is my hope that you will take the time to consider donating to this campaign, to continue having thoughtful conversations about how we can make this world a safe place for everyone, and to encourage genuine action.
