Tim Smith passed on Good Friday of lymphoma. He recently had a stem cell transplant and thought the cancer was defeated - until he was "not feeling right" and had a brain scan which revealed that the cancer had spread into his brain, giving him a short time to live. His cognitive abilities quickly declined over the next couple of days. He lived only another week. So fast, and with little warning, some of his financial account information went with him in death. This left his family in a tough spot of losing both Tim and access to some of their financial accounts. They have a near-term financial shortfall until death certificates are obtained, financial accounts reopened, and Tim's life insurance pays out. I'm told this can take two to three months, creating an immediate hardship. Tim's wife Samantha home schools the three younger children and therefore has not been employed.
Shortly after Tim was diagnosed last year, his employer experienced a financial decline and laid him off last fall. So he went into the hospital having to convert the family's company medical insurance to a COBRA plan at very high rates as their only way to avoid even greater financial calamity. That, plus chemo followed by a lengthy hospital stay for the stem cell transplant devastated their lives and finances.
Tim was a caring friend, coworker, and father of four high achieving kids ages 8 - 20. Devoted to his beliefs, he served others in Children's Church and helped his aging parents who lived just blocks away. His parents, Bob and Barbara said, "Tim honored his mother and father every day of his life."
A group of Tim's friends have gathered together to raise enough to take the sting out of the shock of losing Tim and their finances.
Many have already expressed a desire to help, and I'm sure you can see how a sudden cognitive decline followed by death could affect anyone as it did Tim and his family. He knew he was in uncertain territory, but likely thought there was time to finish settling his affairs. That decline led to him being bedridden and under hospice care, with a greatly reduced ability to walk, talk, or otherwise communicate.
After the immediate needs are met, any remaining proceeds will be set aside by Tim's wife Samantha for ongoing medical expenses and the children's education.
