Maternity Leave

Where do I begin?

Well, I grew up in Montgomery Alabama from the age of 12 years old. Before then, I lived in Great Britain, Nebraska, Texas and a suburb of Montgomery. I always wanted to travel and see new things and meet new people.

After graduating from college, I traveled to South Korea to teach English. It was a great experience! I met my husband and learned about another culture. I also learned who I was as a person and what I wanted to do with my life.

While in Korea, I didn't want to have a baby, because I didn't know the language and I wanted to be at home in the US where I understood what was going on and could ask questions. However, looking back, I should have had a child in Korea. First of all, they pay you to have a child in Korea. The government gives you a thousand dollars to cover the expense of having your child. Plus, I'm pretty sure that you receive paid maternity leave in Korea--- everyone, no matter where you work. I recently found out that the US is one of two modernized countries that do not provide paid maternity leave to its citizens.

However, Korea wasn't for us. So, we decided to move to back to the US and I decided to start my career teaching math. We moved to Ohio, so I could participate in a fellowship program. After graduating, I found a job that I thought was perfect. However, I have no options to get a penny for almost 2 months while on maternity leave!!! I can't apply for short term disability--- they won't pay me. I can't apply for unemployment--- not unemployed/ can't quit my job to apply. I can't even get fellow co workers to donate leave to me through an emergency fund--- I have to be dying or lost a limb (babies don't count as an emergency to receive help from others in this district). And I haven't worked in the district long enough to have enough leave days to cover ANY of my leave. I was given 3 sick days. I have a half a day left due to doctors appointments.

I can't believe that in this country that I call home, I don't have any options for obtaining any financial assistance during my maternity leave. I am forced to work up until I have my baby and maybe return to work before I am completely healed.

So, I am asking the people that I call friends and family to help me out. If 300 hundred people could donate 10 dollars, then we would be able to pay all of our bills and buy what we need to for our baby. I am really hoping that this is possible.

Words would not be able to express the gratitude I would feel if you were able to donate 10 dollars or even 5. That is more than the state of Ohio is willing to give me. I just can't imagine bringing our child in the world and becoming 2 or 3 month delinquent on some of our bills.

Thank you for taking the time to read about my story and I thank you for anything that you are willing to donate.
