My name is Deni. I am doing this fundraising site for my Husband Tom McCabe (I call him "Hercules"). In January of 2014, he told me he was having trouble breathing. Having been an RN for 35-years, I suggested we dial 911 and get to the ER.
When we got there, all hell broke loose. I could see based on my experience that the procedures where were putting him through were incorrect -- as it turns out, I was right. The hospital actually put him into congestive heart failure. To make matters worse, Tom went into respiratory distress and ultimate failure. During this time, his heart's Ejection Fraction (EF), decreased to 20%.
He was in a hospital setting for five and a half months. When he finally got out, he had gangrene on both feet and required partial amputations. He lost his ability to walk, and could not feed or clean himself. My Hercules worked his butt off and regained most of his ability over the months that followed.
Unfortunately, we got some really bad news this week: His ejection fraction had fallen from 20% to 11%. In short, My husband's heart is almost dead.
But there is a solution.
We are going to Tampa General Transplant Center on Monday May 11, 2015. He will go through a series of tests and chest scans and he could have to stay there until a heart becomes available.
I don't have to tell you that a heart transplant is not a cheap procedure. The monthly meds alone afterwards can be $800 - $2000 a month after what the insurance will contribute.
