Baby Sophie's recovery
Donation protected
On Friday March 29, 2019, mom Kate picked up baby Sophie from daycare after attending a job interview. Baby Sophie turns 1 in a month and Kate was looking to return to the work force early as she was unable to work for most of her pregnancy due to severe hyperemesis requiring hospitalization.
When Kate picked up baby Sophie from daycare, she was just sitting down for a snack and had started projectile vomiting. The daycare provider also informed Kate that earlier in the day, baby Sophie had fallen and had injured her face. Kate decided to have her checked out at the local Urgent Care Center to be on the safe side since Sophie also appeared to be lethargic.
Once Sophie was seen by the doctors and nurses, Kate was informed of every parents worst nightmare. It appeared as though Sophie had sustained a head injury and was rushed to Victoria General Hospital by ambulance, sirens blaring. Once at VGH, the pediatric trauma team assessed Sophie and performed a multitude of tests, including a CT scan of her head. The CT scan revealed a possible skull fracture and a frontal lobe subdural hemmorage. The team decided that it was best for Sophie to be transferred to BC Childrens Hospital for the best possible care and monitoring. If the pressure in Sophie's brain builds up from the internal bleeding, it is possible that she will require neurosurgery.
Sophie and mom Kate, were flown to the hospital later that night by a specialized medical helicopter. Dad Tom took the ferry and met his family at the hospital.Once at BC Childrens, further testing revealed that she had also sustained hemmoraging at the back of her eyes. Since arriving 2 days ago to the hospital, baby Sophie has already lost 1kg from frequent vomiting and sleeping.
At this time, the pediatric neuro team is closely monitoring Sophie for improvements and there is still a chance she will require surgery. Kate and husband, Tom have been displaced from their home in Westshore, BC to Vancouver, BC, which is a ferry ride away. Tom will be unable to work at his construction job until there is more known about Sophie's condition and recovery. And Kate will be unable to continue her job search in either Administration or Health Care Assistant until baby Sophie is fully recovered and able to attend daycare again.
Please consider donating to baby Sophie so her parents can continue to support her recovery while being displaced to a different city, far from work, family, and friends.
