Toby's Fight Against MDS(Myelodysplastic Syndrome)

We are starting this page in efforts to raise money for our dad, Toby Gutierrez. He was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico and has raised his family here. Toby Gutierrez is a hardworking husband, father of two, and a grandfather of one. He is the oldest of three siblings. Toby is 55 years old and has been a loyal federal worker for 12+ years for USPS. He has been an automotive mechanic for 30+ years, starting his career at auto tech school in Denver.
Toby takes pride in his strong work ethics, and in his family. He is one to put everyone's needs above his and do what is necessary to make ends meet. It has been sudden and unfortunate, but Toby has been diagnosed with Myelodysplastic Syndrome. For those who are unsure of what MDS is, it is a form of cancer. It is extremely rare for people his age to develop this disease. Over time MDS can form into AML (acute myeloid leukemia) with the treatment he will undergo it will reduce the chances of that progression. Usually this type of disease happens with people over the age of 70; Toby is only 55. MDS is when the blood forming cells in the bone marrow become abnormal. This leads to low numbers of one or more types of blood cells. With this being said, Toby will need to undergo intensive chemotherapy and radiation. Following chemo he will need a bone marrow transplant. This entire procedure will need to be done in Denver, Colorado as they have the proper treatment for his case.
Through all of this Toby will have to be in Denver for 100+ consecutive days, not including his recovery at home. Toby is the main source of income in this family. With him being out of work for so long the family is asking for financial assistance to help cover his expenses here in ABQ and in Denver while he is being treated. This includes mortgage and utilities, vehicles and auto insurance, health insurance, travel expenses to and from Denver, as well as a place to live In Denver during these next 3-4 months.
Our goal of $50,000 is to ensure financial security for Toby and his family over a 6 month period. Your help and contributions will help make this difficult time less stressful. We thank you for your time in reading and sharing our story. As always, God bless.
