Toilet Construction Project - Ikwiriri, Tanzania

Donation protected

According to the World Bank, sanitation is the single most cost effective public health intervention to reduce child mortality. Around 2.5 billion people around the world do not have access to proper sanitation facilities. During my recent visits to Peru, Mexico and India, I noticed the lack of restrooms and the need for people to go to the bushes or behind buildings as a substitute. I had to go through such an ordeal during a rigorous hiking adventure with my boy scouts troop at Camp PhilMont in the rugged New Mexican wilderness. During this two weeks trip, I had to do my business in the bushes multiple times, and I realized that this excessive and needless experience is part of life for many children in underdeveloped countries. The fear of the animals that could crawl beside or on me made me realize how the lack of proper toilets must be effecting the children to routinely risk their safety to defecate. Their vulnerability is heightened as they venture alone into the forest or in the dark to preserve their privacy and dignity.

A need for better sanitation & hygiene
Now imagine going to a school without a toilet. When I read about the condition of toilets at a school in Tanzania through the Rotary club members I decided to make a difference in the life of these physically disabled and hard of hearing students at Mgomba Primary School in Ikwiriri Village by providing funds to construct a toilet for them to use. Additionally, we aimed to provide wheelchairs for 10 physically disabled students who could not attend school due to lack of facilities.

Project
This project aims to construct two fully functional toilets for the disabled at the Mgomba Primary School in Ikwiriri Village. The latrine block will consist of two sitting style toilets specially made for the physically disabled, and a wall around the entrance of the latrine block for privacy. Wheelchairs will be donated to the 10 disabled students who are currently unable to attend school due to the lack of facilities.
