Help Me Keep My Apartment!

On November 18th, I came home from therapy to find my roommate had moved out without warning and blocked me and all our mutual friends on social media. He left me with his part of the bills, a sick ferret, and a lot of hurt feelings.
For the last couple years, he'd been taking care of the rent and groceries while I covered all the other bills, which allowed me to pursue freelance work as a writer and editor. But it also means he left me in no position to take up those extra expenses, and certainly not along with the care of a ferret with insulinoma.
Right now I'm pursuing new sources of income using my current portfolio--blogging and editing work, mostly, along with an app put in to a nearby used book shop where I worked a while back--but it's December, so available jobs are thin, and the ones that I'm finding aren't likely to pay in time to make sure January 1st's rent is covered. I don't drive, which limits my local employment options, and minimum wage isn't exactly something you can live on by yourself anymore. I only managed to have a roommate in this apartment because we were already good friends. Despite having two bedrooms, it's not large enough for two strangers.
And meanwhile, I need to take care of myself and buy some pretty pricey ferret kibble.
Rent is only $650, but it's still that much more than I was prepared to pay by the end of December. I also need to cover food for myself, his ferret, and my cat, as well as replace some things he took fairly but which I still need. I can cover the utilities with the work I already have, but the rest is up in the air.
