Tramway Soccer Club Water Supply

Background
Tramway Football Club is one of the oldest soccer clubs in South Africa, established in 1923. It is a registered charity and supported by a team of committed community volunteers from various demographic, racial, religious, and socioeconomic back grounds. The club has a proud history, including being the first club to introduce women’s soccer to South Africa. The club is progressive and has transformed itself in keeping with the needs of the community it serves. The club uses soccer as a vehicle to integrate its diverse community and has identified the development of children as its main priority. The club currently has over 300 children in its junior development program.

Tramway Fields Need Your Help
Due to an ongoing drought and water crisis, the City of Cape Town has implemented a level 5 water restriction. This bans the usage of municipal water for many functions, including watering sports fields. The current soccer field was installed by the government in 2016, but they did not install a borehole. Boreholes provide access to the non-drinkable ground water and are commonly used in Cape Town for watering gardens. In order to water this field, Tramway must pay for the building of a borehole so that the field will not die in the dry summer months ahead.

The cost of installing a borehole is around $6,000. Fundraising has been taking place through many venues, and our goal for this page is $2,000. This is very important as NO FIELD EQUALS NO SOCCER. Without access to water, the field will become unusable. Without a field, there is not a space for the kids to play soccer and lead healthy and empowered lives. Please consider making a donation and contribute to the continued effort to uplift youth in South Africa via soccer. Thank you for your support!

More About Tramway FC
Physical activity is very important in children’s lives in promoting health and wellness and preventing obesity. Tramway FC strives to take it a step further, and utilize soccer as a vehicle for enrichment in other areas of life.

Social Integration: In the aftermath of apartheid, South Africa is still largely segregated. People of all races are free to exist in all spaces, yet often children do not interact with peers of other races or religions. Tramway FC integrates the diverse community of Cape Town and brings kids of all backgrounds together in the spirit of social transformation in the new South Africa.

Girl Empowerment:
Girls soccer is neglected and underdeveloped in South Africa. Girls are not given many opportunities to participate in a soccer team, and often have a higher rate of physical inactivity. Tramway’s youth girls-only team was started by students, and has been continued by dedciated community volunteers to grow into the largest girls-only soccer team in the country. This team of talented girls often often competes against boys teams in the league. Here is a video recognizing this incredible team!

Health:
A multidisciplinary team of doctors runs a free health and wellness program for family members of the junior soccer players that takes place during the soccer practice. This includes a health and fitness screening followed by supervised exercise with health and dietary counseling. Tramway also partners with a local student-run mobile clinic to offer free health screenings during soccer games.

Life Skills:
As anyone who has played a team sport can tell you, being part of a team as a child teaches you a lot of life skills. Tramway aims to encourage teamwork, commitment, respect, communication, and goal setting in the youth that they support. Additionally, this team exists as an alternative to gangs and drug abuse that is prevalent in the lives of many of the youth.

Why is Tramway accessible and successful?
Tramway FC does not exclude children on the basis of finances. Those who can pay do, and those who can’t don’t. This club actively targets children from diverse communities, promoting tolerance, understanding, and a sense of family. Without soccer, these kids would not have been brought together and these objectives would not be obtained.

Please consider making a donation and contribute to the continued effort to uplift youth in South Africa via soccer. Thank you for your support!
