Help transgender kids be themselves
Our goal is to provide all transgender youth in New South Wales with the legal support they need and we are asking for your help!
Australia is one of the few countries around the world that require complicated applications to the Family Court for a transgender youth to access the critical cross-sex hormones. These hormones are essential to enable a young person to transition and can be the lifeline for someone grappling with crippling dysphoria and mental health issues. This can cost well over $20, 000 for a private solicitor.
While empowering young people to access cross-sex hormones, we are also hoping to raise awareness. But ultimately, we want to advocate for law reform, which enables faster access to transitioning treatments and safer and healthier LGBTIQ communities.
We are one of the only services that provide this legal support FREE of charge.
Help us help Australia’s trans youth NOW. #translawreform

Who are we?
We are the Inner City Legal Centre. For more than 30 years, the ICLC has been providing much needed legal support to Sydney’s most vulnerable. We also provide state-wide specialist legal advice service for the LGBTIQ community, including court support services for LGBTIQ people experiencing/escaping domestic violence. We actively contribute to community awareness programs/education and collaborate with a range of community organisations, networks and government agencies.
Since 2013, the ICLC has been acknowledged as the leading legal service assisting families to lodge Special Medical Procedure applications to the Family Court, but as a very small legal centre, we are not able to keep up with expanding demand.

Why we need your help
We are receiving an unprecedented number of enquiries from parents of children who have gender dysphoria and are required to apply to the Family Court to access cross-sex hormones as part of their transitioning process. These children are at high risk of self-harm if they are not able to transition in a timely manner. Children who want to have top surgery (bilateral mastectomy and male chest reconstruction) for female-to-male transition are subject to similar requirements for court oversight and approval.
Right now we just don’t have the capacity to help everyone who comes through our doors. Many transgender Australians are turning to the black market or simply not getting the medical support they so desperately need.
Watch the video of a young trans Australian who has struggled and learn why this service is so valuable to them.

What will $20,000 do?
We want to continue to employ a specialist solicitor to work with transgender youths and their families, providing support and access to legal advice when engaging with the court system. This solicitor will be employed on a part-time basis to do all the necessary legal work, such as preparing Special Medical Procedures applications for the Family Court. The work is time-consuming and often confusing and we want to make the processes easier for these families.
At the same time as running these matters, our specialist solicitor will continue to lobby the federal government to put an end to the requirement of Family Court approval in the transitioning process. If we are successful in this law reform work, no transgender person under 18 will need to apply to the Family Court to access cross sex hormones to begin the transitioning process.
In an ideal world, these families would not have to go through this arduous and complicated legal step to access what they need. Our ultimate goal is to effect that change. For now, we can support these transgender families through the process and for that we need you! #translawreform
