Trauma Crisis Intervention in NK

The Women’s Resource Centre Shushi was established in 2007 for the sole purpose of serving as the first drop-in center for women living in a conflict area. The center works on issues related to women, peace and security. One of its main objectives is to assess the levels of trauma of the women and children whose daily life is impacted by the unresolved conflict with Azerbaijan.
April 2nd of this year marked the the deadliest resumption of violence since a cease fire was established in 1994 over the Nagorno Karabakh enclave. As you may now, there have been a number of fundraising campaigns for humanitarian needs. However, no attention has been paid to the psychological ramifications of the war, especially on women and children.
Trauma has become a constant companion for the majority of people living in NK and it can only be rehabilitated with proper support. Making psychological help available gives individuals and communities the possibility to heal and return to a sense of normalcy. Without such help, the wounds and trauma of this conflict grow ever deeper, permeating all facets of life.
Gayane Hambardzumyan, Director of WRC Shushi, and a committed group of professional psychologists and peace activists have been busy assessing the current situation of displaced families — mainly women and children — who have been affected by the recent escalation of conflict . Their findings show that the majority of these women, most of them with young children, are suffering double trauma: the current conflict coupled with the war experienced 20 years ago. Additionally, these women have to deal with the trauma faced by their children.
The objective of this campaign is to raise funds to finance the very necessary work of professional psychologists who will work with this affected population in NK. The funds will be used for psychologists’ room, board, and modest daily expenses.
Breakdown of costs for two psychologists per week:
Transportation: $64
Accommodation for 7 nights: $280
Lunch & dinner: $220
Material costs: $70
Any amount you give will be great appreciated and used towards providing this crucial service.
What you give now will have significant bearing on the psychological health of this and future generations of Armenians living in NK.
Thank you for considering to support this work!
