Troop 23,Richmond VT,50 miler trip
Donation protected
BSA Troop 23 (Richmond/Bolton/Huntington, VT) is raising money to help cover the equipment and transportation costs associated with planning and completing a 50 mile wilderness backpacking trip. We have secured a trail permit for the amazing Rae Lakes Loop (pictured above and link below) in Kings Canyon National Park for August 2018.
The Scouts hope to earn their 50 miler Award for this hike (see link below). Troop 23 has completed two 50 miler trips in the past few years - a backpacking trip on the Long Trail in 2014 and a canoeing trip in the Adirondacks in 2016. To earn this award, each Scout has to give back to the hiking community by completing 10 hours of volunteer service in addition to covering 50 miles in at least 5 days. Troop 23 scouts will be donating hours to our local public hiking trails and hopefully to the trail system we will be using in California.
Backpacking 50 miler on the Long Trail, Vermont
Locally, we will continue our existing trail adoption work on the Long Trail north of Camels Hump. Troop 23 has a long history of completing service projects that benefit local hiking resources. As a troop, we have spent significant hours in the last few years cutting a new section of the Long Trail in Bolton, clearing water bars on the old Jericho Road trail in Richmond, and Eagle Projects in the Preston Pond Preserve trail system.

The funds raised will go towards:
1) purchasing backpacking equipment that will be used by the whole troop after the 50 miler,
2) making this trip affordable for all the scouts who are interested in completing this adventure and
3) other expenses as needed
Support for this project will allow the boys to grow their outdoors and leadership skills, plan and complete a backpacking trip longer than many people hike in a lifetime, and experience the beauty of the American wilderness.
In addition to this GoFundMe page, Troop 23 scouts will be holding several local fundraising projects to help us reach our goal. We will post updates to this page as our fundraising and planning efforts progress.
Troop 23 50 miler scouts greatly appreciate donations in any amount.
Donations are tax deductable.
