Food for Thought for the Homeless
Donation protected
Valentine’s Day 2016, a friend and I ventured out into the bitter cold, with a car full of food and gifts for the homeless. Our intention was to pass out a number of backpacks (food/care packages that we had put together), to whoever looked like they could use some food and a few extra things.
This project, FOOD FOR THOUGHT FOR THE HOMELESS, is a platform where myself and others from the Montreal community are attempting to connect with our humanity and see those that need to be seen.
My name is Verona Sorensen and I am a professional painter, interested in infusing my life and the lives of others with beauty and humanity, through my art and through projects like these.
The FOOD FOR THOUGHT FOR THE HOMELESS package distributions will take place a few times a year. It is geared towards helping those living on the street of Montréal.
Each outing may have a different focal point depending on what items have been collected. The latest outing, for example, included long coats for women.
If you would like to donate a care package to someone living on the street, you may do so here. As of the last few drives each bag is generally valued at $75. Whatever you wish to contribute is perfect. This Gofundme platform is so that others who are not able to participate directly and in person are still able to have a chance to engage with this project. You are welcome to contribue whatever you like... $20, $30, $40. And, of course, you are also welcome to donate a whole bag if you are moved to do so. Everything helps!
Generally, a package includes a fold-up backpack, wool socks, new underwear, a Tim Hortons $15 gift card, packet of kleenex, bar of soap, shampoo and conditioner, toothbrush, toothpaste, dental floss, toothbrush protector, a sketch book, a pen and pencil, pencil sharpener, an erase, plastic utensils, napkins, homemade sandwiches, salads, celery and carrots, fruit, pasteries, and chocolates.
These packages are unique for they contain a sketch book that can be used for writing and drawing, a place where a person can express and reflect and keep creative.
Thank you to those who have already participated. It’s truly warming to the heart to see so many people getting on board with such enthusiasm.
Let's keep the momentum going!
