<div>Hi everyone. My name is Mari Copeny, I’m 17 years old, and you may know me as “Little Miss Flint” even though I’m not so little anymore. I'm an activist, advocate, and philanthropist. I'm also a Flint kid that loves giving back to Flint kids. I host several events throughout the year, including a back-to-school backpack and supply giveaway, an Easter Egg hunt, book giveaways, and more.

<div>Since 2017, I have been doing an annual Christmas event for the kids in my community. Every year I try to outdo myself from the previous year. I love Christmas, and being able to spread the magic of Christmas to other kids is my favorite thing to do. Every year I make sure to include activities that add even more Christmas spirit to the event, including stocking stuffing, cookie decorating, an exotic animal petting zoo, live reindeer, a hot cocoa bar, an elf adoption center, arts and crafts, inflatables, and a Black Santa.

<div>This is my 9th year doing my holiday event, and the need in the community is higher now than ever before, with my team already receiving requests from families that need help this holiday season. <strong>Knowing the need is higher, we will try to help as many families as possible.</strong> We have been averaging about 1,000 kids each year but would love to double that number this year.

<div>For the past 9 years, I have been doing my annual back-to-school drive and backpack giveaway. In my very first year, my goal was 50 backpacks and I was able to 100. In my second year, we did 1,000 backpacks. One year we did a backpack for every single child in the city of Flint. To date, we have been able to distribute 20,000 fully stuffed backpacks.

<div>The average cost of the school supply list from teachers from kindergarten to 12th grade is over 120 dollars, most low-income families can not afford these supplies and it puts a strain on the kid's teachers to try to fill the gap. We want to make sure kids are equipped with everything they need to have a successful school year.

My name is Mari Copeny, I’m a 12 year old from Flint, Michigan. You may know me as Little Miss Flint. I have been fighting to ensure my community has access to clean safe water since I was 8 years old. <br /><img src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/40432464_1565245639481535_r.jpeg" alt="40432464_1565245639481535_r.jpeg" width="100%" media_type="3" /><br /><br />Ever since April 2014 my community has been faced with a lead crisis that we are still recovering from. <br /><br /><img src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/40432464_1565239848895898_r.jpeg" alt="40432464_1565239848895898_r.jpeg" width="100%" media_type="3" /><br /><br /><br />What’s even worse is that Flint is not the only community dealing with a water crisis. Across the country there are cities and communities being faced with their own water crisis, some have water even more toxic then Flint. <br /><br />Newark, NJ <br />Pittsburg, PN <br />NYC<br /><br /><br /><br />This is why I want to bring clean water not to just my community but to other communities across the country that are facing their own water crisis. <br /><br /><img src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/40432464_1565245305962296_r.jpeg" alt="40432464_1565245305962296_r.jpeg" width="100%" media_type="3" /><br /><br /><br />For these campaigns, I’m partnering with a socially-responsible water filtration company to bring state of the art water filters to communities nationwide that are impacted by poor water quality. The water filtration approach has three main advantages over bottled water:<br /><br /><br />1. <strong>Cost of Impact</strong>: Every dollar donated to this campaign will provide over 160 bottles worth of safe drinking water. This has 15x the impact of donating to bottled water campaigns. <br /><br />2. <strong>Time</strong>: In Flint, I see that people are spending hours in line to receive donations bottled water. By giving people the ability to have safe water, on demand in their home, they won’t have to take time off from work or spend their weekends lined up to get bottled water. <br /><br />3. <strong>Environmental Impact</strong>: While bottled water can be a good solution for immediate fix to a crisis, it is not a sustainable fix when the world is drowning in plastic pollution. <br /><br /><strong>Flint Water Crisis Background</strong> <br />The Flint Water Crisis began in 2014 when the drinking water source for the city of Flint, Michigan was changed from pre-treated water from Detroit to the Flint River and treated in the Flint Water Treatment Plant. The treatment plant was not equipped with the proper equipment to treat the water (which would have cost around $100 a day), and the river water damaged the pipes allowing lead and bacteria to get into the water. For month’s local officials and the media claimed the water was fine and that the residents were overreacting, even as scientist began to uncover just how bad the water crisis was. Many homes had water comparable to toxic waste.<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><strong>“Little Miss Flint” Background </strong><br />Through my previous water donation campaigns, I was able to donate over ONE MILLION bottles of water to families impacted by the Flint Lead Crisis. My community needed water they could trust and bottled water was the only resource for drinking water that many in my community trusted. For my new donation campaign, my team has partnered with a socially-responsible water filtration company, which will allow us to maximize the impact of donated funds and eliminate the single use plastic waste that is associated with bottled water.<br /><br /><img src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/40432464_156524176846158_r.jpeg" alt="40432464_156524176846158_r.jpeg" width="100%" media_type="3" /><br /><br /><strong>Socially-Responsible Corporate Partner Background </strong><br />Hydroviv was Founded by a Ph.D. Chemist as a charitable response to the Flint Lead Crisis in 2015. Hydroviv was called out by The Chicago Tribune and BBC as the first water filter “company” to develop and donate high-capacity lead removal filters to families &amp; child-centric organizations in Flint. Four years later, Hydroviv now designs &amp; builds custom water filters for people around the US, and makes these products available to the public at a fraction of the cost of comparable systems. Hydroviv recently appeared on ABC’s Shark Tank where Mark Cuban praised Hydroviv’s charitable roots as “doing well by doing good.” For this campaign, Hydroviv has agreed to provide their premium filters at their break-even cost.

<div>And while all of my big projects are a ton of fun, there is a smaller project I started back in September that has grown more and more weekly. #OpSnack begun when we had a few local kids coming by asking if we had any extra snacks. We found out that there are several families in our community that are struggling to make ends meet and to make sure that they have food on their tables. So that's how Operation Snack aka #OpSnack was born. We distribute snack bags and meal bags to local kids and teens so they arent going to bed hungry (and arent stealing food from the local store). Since September we have grown to take care of over 50 kids/teens from not only  our neighborhood but also other neighborhoods in our ward.

<div>While we use an ongoing wishlist to help with getting snacks and food items, we have began to take request from our kids and have been expanding to include more fresh food options like fresh fruits, yogurts, fresh veggies and more. This summer we  plan on doing ice cream from the local ice cream truck supply store twice a week (buying in bulk is way cheaper then from an ice cream truck), and to also keep popsicles in the deep freezer for the kids every day.

<div>With the highly anticipated upcoming drop of "The Little Mermaid" I want to be able to rent out a couple of theaters for local kids to be able to see the film when it releases. And in true team Mari fashion, we can't just do a screening, we have to make sure we are giving kids all of the merch we can find. I am huge on representation and for little black kids to see themselves on the big screen.

<div>Hi everyone. My name is Mari Copeny, you may know me as Little Miss Flint although I'm not little anymore. I am a clean water and environmental activist. My work began in Flint during the Flint water crisis, I was able to fundraise for over a million bottles of water for my community before I partnered with a company to produce my very own water filter to make access to safe drinking water accessible directly from the faucet, my filters have been shipped out all over the country to those dealing with toxic drinking water.

<div>As many have seen there was a train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio which is causing all types of issues for those in the immediate area. While we do not have data to show the effects of this environmental disaster it's safe to assume that it is not safe to drink the water from the tap there until testing can prove it is biologically safe to be filtered and consumed. As we seen in Flint we were told the water was safe while being lied to and poisoned at the same time.

<div>Every year, I help host an Easter egg hunt and give out baskets to the local kids. Last year we gave out over 100 baskets. This year the goal is between 150-200 baskets. I have already started assemblings baskets and have about 40 started out of my own pocket. Now I need some help filling the baskets and making sure the Easter egg hunt is all I imagine it to be. Every basket will have between $20-25 worth of toys plus candy and other goodies.

When I was little, I had quite a few speech issues, so bad that I was teased about it and got to the point where I didn't really want to talk. I was in speech from pre-school until the 6th grade. Pageants helped me find my voice and gain the confidence I needed to work through it. Pageants gave me the confidence and platform that ultimately led me to take care of my community.

And I was accepted to compete in the upcoming pageant in May. But to get there, I will need some help covering pageant fees and related costs (dress, shoes, headshots, hotel, etc.). If I win, I will be one of the youngest ever to be crowned Miss Michigan Teen USA, not to mention the vast platform it will give me to spread even more awareness about toxic water across the country.

Last year we were unable to hold our annual Easter egg hunt due to being in the first wave of the pandemic. <br /><br />This year, we are able to hold an Easter Egg hunt for 200 children. I am partnering with the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Flint to make this a fun, socially distanced event for local kids. This will be our first "big event" in 15 months. And in true Team Mari fashion, I would like to make this event a little over the top. So in addition to the easter egg hunt I want to make sure every kid also gets an Easter basket filled with treats and goodies.

Covid has been rough on everyone, but the kids are often not thought about. <br /><br />I have two ideas for how to pull this off this year. We can do a drive-thru event where families can come pick up toys or we can do deliveries directly to the kids.
