I am Chris McWayne, more commonly known by Maf Maddix or Brother Aten. I am a musician and sound artist living in Charlotte, NC. Having recently been accepted into the distinguished University of Arts in London’s sound arts masters program , I have an opportunity to further my career significantly while deepening my knowledge and skill base. I tend to feel more comfortable only doing things that I can afford on my own but this move is beyond what I can handle financially. The significance of this exceptional opportunity makes it important that I step out of my comfort zone to seek the help of the community I have been a part of for so long.
Primarily through the arts, I have been a rich contributor to North Carolina’s cultural and social atmosphere for the past 16 years. My growth as an artist has encouraged me to invest more into my personal development in deep and meaningful ways to live a life constantly inspired allowing me to inspire others.
I have been admitted to my first choice program to pursue a Sound Art M.A. at the University of Arts in London (UAL) (http://www.arts.ac.uk/).
-Sound art is a fairly new artistic discipline in which
sound is utilized as a primary medium. Like many genres of contemporary art, sound art is interdisciplinary in nature, or takes on hybrid forms.
-At UAL I will find the technical tools and collaboration opportunities that are instrumental to the realization of my broader vision. UAL has one of the best programs in the world, taught by professors at the top of their field.
This interdisciplinary program and placement would provide me with a dynamic opportunity to build upon my past work while setting me up for the possibility of pursuing a PhD.
-At this point in my career, a move to Europe would greatly enhance my ability to connect with my international resources and contacts as well as put me in closer proximity to my record label based in Berlin.
-I also look forward to the inspiration and energy I would glean from my fellow classmates, professors and a major city such as London.
I have worked as an artist for the last 16years, living in Charlotte for 8 of those years collaborating, performing at and working with Blumenthal Performing Arts Center, Harvey B. Gantt Center for African American Arts + Culture and McColl Center for Art + Innovation, as well as many of the independent art centers in the city. During this time, I evolved from creating strictly within the hip hop genre as a lyricist to now include:
Electronic production
Dance and fitness
Directing
Writing
Sound installation
Performance art
Modeling
Acting
Artist Development/Mentorship
My advancement calls me to immerse myself in a creative learning atmosphere and push myself towards larger productions, more technically intricate constructions, and sound design work. My goal for live performances is to go beyond the album tracks and venture into abstract productions incorporating installations, theatre, dance, visual and performance art, etc. While I have made great strides independently, my goals require much research, experimentation, practice and education. Rather than continuing a rough progression through independent study, I’ve been given the rare opportunity to invest in my future development by studying at UAL’s highly selective program where I am confident the mentorship, training, and access to resources would greatly accelerate my artistic development.
In order to acquire the proper immigration visa and enter into the MA program, I need to establish that I have a majority of the required funds as well as pay 50% of the tuition prior to September enrollment (and there isn't much financial aid available for international students from the USA). I am utilizing everything at my disposal to ensure that I do not miss this opportunity. Outside of my own savings, income and liquidated assets, other funding initiatives include:
Paid projects and shows
Professional modelling work
Applying for scholarships and grants I qualify for
Running a gofundme campaign
A series of entrepreneurial initiatives including
--workshops
--music and visual arts events
--lectures with interactive discussion
--fundraising parties
While in London, I plan to continue my work in the arts to cover costs that may arise during the course of study. The total for this year long program requires an investment of $46,616USD which includes travel, tuition, immigration fees and living expenses.
Please help me reach this dream for educational growth as a long time member of the North Carolina artistic community. I am actively using everything at my disposal to meet this goal and your contribution would help tremendously.
