Rosa + Gina's Ice Cream Truck

On August 1st, 2018, Rosa and Gina Chunchi were the victims of harassment. Their livelihood and property was attacked, and they encountered threats against their physical safety. Contribute today to help them recuperate the losses they suffered as a result of these unfair attacks, totaling $3,200.

Rosa Chunchi immigrated to the US in 1993 from Ecuador. She came to escape the domestic violence which had caused her to lose her first child to a miscarriage at 6 months. She first arrived in New York, and after three years, made her way to Minneapolis. Since arriving in here in 1996, Rosa has worked hard to make a living for herself and to put food on the table for her children and family members, both here in and Ecuador. She is a single mother of two children here in Minneapolis, two children still in Ecuador, and two who are no longer with us.

In May of 2018, after years of working long hours which forced her to be away from her home and children from early in the morning until late at night, she started her own business – an ice cream truck! This work allowed her more flexible hours and granted her more time to spend with her family. Rosa and her youngest daughter, Gina, who’s 13 and a student at Columbia Heights Academy, has spent the summer working together, as mother and daughter, in the ice cream truck.

On Wednesday, August 1st Gina and Rosa were working on the truck in Northeast Park. The area attracted good business as community members got refreshments after soccer matches at the park. This night an individual repeatedly harassed Rosa and Gina. They asked if they were undocumented, and were told to leave the vicinity. When they refused, Rosa and Gina had one of the tires of their truck slashed and threats made against their physical safety.

The attack left them without the ability to earn wages. Besides lost income, they’ll also have to spend hundreds of dollars on repairs to the truck, including a new tire, before it can be driven again.

Please give whatever you can to support Rosa, Gina, and their family in overcoming the violence that has been done to them. This is not our community, this is not who we are. Please give today and spread the word!

$3,200 will support Rosa, Gina, and their family in paying for:
- New tire to replace the one slashed
- Towing services for the truck
- Lost income from the time they’ve been and will be unable to work while the truck’s tire is being replaced - Counseling and support services following their traumatic attack
