The volunteer forensics team from the University of Indianapolis Human Identification Center will be returning to South Texas to continue working with other organizations to identify and repatriate unidentified migrants. On this trip we will begin excavations in a new county that needs volunteer assistance conducting forensic archeological exhumations and we will conduct skeletal analyses on previously exhumed individuals from Sacred Heart Burial Park. We are working with Texas State University to exhume and analyze the remains of unidentified migrants so they can begin the journey of identification that will lead them home to their families. Our efforts in South Texas are on a completely volunteer basis and we are hoping to raise money to support the travel and lodging costs for the students participating. This year we have 4 students that will be assisting in both the excavation and skeletal analysis portions of this humanitarian mission. This will be a longer, more intense and more expensive trip than previous missions. For more information, watch this short video from a previous field season found here. You can also read about our past humanitarian missions in South Texas and follow our new activities on our blog, which you can check out here.
