Help get Onyx Magazine into print
Introducing...
- O n y x M a g a z i n e -
As early as the Second Dynasty, Ancient Egyptians used Onyx to form sculptures and create beautiful pieces of artwork...
Run by black students studying at Oxford University, Onyx Magazine aims to be the medium that students of African and Caribbean heritage from within Oxford, across the UK and beyond can use to materialise and showcase their voices and creativity.
Our publishing categories range from poetry, fiction, film, theatre, lifestyle & culture to art fashion, history and politics.
Our mission
In 2016 BAME people made up 11% of 32,422 jobs in the creative industry and out of the thousands of books published in 2016 in the UK, fewer than 100 were by British authors of a non-white background. The mission of Onyx is to create a space that celebrates underrepresented voices in an industry that has failed to do so. We hope to provide a platform for students of African and Caribbean heritages to showcase their creative ventures in a high-quality printed magazine.
Why we need YOUR help
We are a non-for-profit organisation committed to providing publication opportunities and access to the creative arts and as such, our publication will be distributed completely free. This means that we are reliant on external sponsorship and funding to make our vision come to life. We’ve had incredible submissions so far from across the UK and beyond. We want to share and celebrate the art, photography and articles our contributors and editors have worked so hard to produce... but we can’t do any of it without your help.

We want Onyx to be a high-end and high-quality printed magazine in order to match and showcase the quality of the submissions we have received.
Our printing costs have decreased since gaining financial support worth £1.5k from Oxford University's Access Department! Our overall target has decreased due to the teams financial efforts in securing funding and kind and generous donators. We are closer to our goal than ever!
We have worked hard to secure support-in-kind totaling over £8,000 to fund several other areas of the magazine including securing the venue, AV, photography, video, and catering. The only thing remaining is our printing and design costs. We'd be incredibly grateful for any contribution that you can make towards getting Onyx to print. We hope that you share our vision and support us in platforming the creative works of the talented young people of African and Caribbean heritage.
Be a part of the vision and donate to Onyx today!
