They say “actions speak louder than words”—yet despite all my efforts and contributions to Hampton University, I have been left with no choice but to use my voice.
Allow me to introduce myself: My name is James Weaver, IV. I am a first-generation student from Chicago, Illinois. I currently attend Hampton University, where I major in strategic communication and minor in marketing. During my matriculation at Hampton, I have been extremely active both in and outside of the classroom. For the past few years, I have served in several organizations and greatly impacted the university community. As a member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), I have served as the Political Action chair and the 2017-2018 “Mr. NAACP.” I was also a member of the Greer-Dawson Student Leadership Training Program. Moreover, in 2016, I performed a spoken word piece and represented HU at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia, PA. Though Hampton has provided me with countless memories and experiences, they have also made it difficult for students like myself to walk across the stage.
Of course, no institution is perfect; and neither am I. However, “The Standard of Excellence” this illustrious university has set and been recognized for has not been maintained. I am disappointed in the administration for their continuous miscommunication. I am also disappointed with how Hampton is ran more like a business than an environment breeding the next generation of black leaders and innovators. Understanding that I am not the only student experiencing these issues with financial aid and my desire to participate in the graduation ceremony has prompted me to speak up and ask for help.
Due to the lack of support, unorganized student records, and desensitized administration, I am left with minimal options. I've never been the type to ask for anything, however, I have to be realistic in my understanding that my family is unable to cover the remaining balance needed for me to graduate at this time.
I was notified this past week that my remaining balance is $9,019.50. I am deeply saddened by the stress this is causing my family, especially considering this is my last month of college. For now, we are accepting all donations, big or small. We thank you all in advance and are extremely appreciative of any contributions made. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions, comments, or concerns.
Sincerely,
James Weaver, IV
