Using the field to get to college#2

Friends, family, & the friends and family of thos friends.

Exactly one year ago today, we started a gofundme campaign for our Crawford soccer players to play club soccer. When the campaign was launched, we weren’t sure what would happen, and in all honesty there was just a faith that people would come together and help an awesome cause.

After the first couple days there was excitement because a couple of hundred dollars had been raised. Then a couple days later something happened that none of us expected and not only was our goal met, but we exceeded it by a hundred dollars!

Since we had such good luck last year when we launched on May 2nd, we have decided that every year on May 2nd we will attempt to raise money through a community of online people who not only believe in our athlete’s soccer abilities, but also believe our athletes can go on and do great things post high school!

Club Soccer is one of the best ways for our Crawford athletes to be recruited by colleges and The San Diego United Soccer Club has graciously offered to  lower the fees for the players , however our students are unable to afford even the reduced fees that are being offered. A large percentage of our students are refugees, new to the country, and, in some cases, new to formal education. Their families are just becoming settled and are striving to secure housing and employment. There is no money left over for the expenses of club soccer. Each one of our students is extremely dedicated on and off the field. They are all on track academically to get into college. These student athletes are determind to succeed, most of the students ride the bus and trolley to and from training and at times get home late at night

Crawford is a unique school, and for some, soccer is their way out! Let me give another quick snapshot of our Crawford student’s situation:

- 97% of our students live below the poverty line
- 90% of our players are immigrants to the United States. 75% of these Immigrants are refugees
- 100% of our students are on free lunch.
- 30 different languages spoken on campus
- Students come from countries where war is common and poverty is an everyday state of life.

Why Club Soccer is so important for these kids to play

Club soccer is massive for these young student athletes. It gives them the ability to practice multiple times a week in a structured environment, allows them to play college showcase tournaments that have college coaches from all over the nation in attendance, allows for them to participate in two college identification camps a year, and also gives them access to a college soccer liaison. This liaison will help find the perfect place for these Crawford players to continue their education after high school.

The main goal is to get these kids placed at a four-year university

The goal is to get every one of the students participating to go straight to a four year university to play. All of these students will be first in their family to attend college, some the first to graduate high school. Thanks to everyone that helped last year the first group was a success! Out of the 6 players that played last year FIVE went on or are going on to college!! The one of the six that didn’t is still playing because he’s only a junior. We had TWO players receive soccer scholarships, 2 players that will be playing at a local junior college, and 1 that will be going to a 4 year university and is going to try and walk on the team to play.

One of the best things about GoFundMe is we have the ability to come together as a community to help serve a cause that is bigger than ourselves.  We’d love if you were able to partner with us and help great things get done!

A couple ways for you to participate in this adventure is:
1) Donate to the cause
2) Share this page with your facebook friends or
3) Donate AND share!

ALL money raised will go directly towards the students. If the goal is exceeded, all excess money will first go to getting them bus passes, and then looking to add an additional player. The end goal is to create a culture where college education is valued and not out of reach for these students. We now have THREE kids going off to take part in a four-year university. Let’s keep the momentum going and help send a couple more!

Thanks!
