Cashier check fraud relief! Help!

I am desperatley pleading on behalf of my family, the VanDervoorts who were scammed through a roommate and a loser on craigslist who have now put us in emmence jeopardy!
Around Christmas we took in a friend, and his pregnant girlfriend. The baby came late in January and we did not ask for any money, though they agreed to pay rent. All the while I had just lost my job, and wasn't starting my new one for five weeks. With only my husbands income coming in, and it being his slow time of the year laying carpet, we fell seriously behind. Just as we started to see the light and begin to pay off some bills with my checks, they offered to pay us for March, but needed help cashing a cashier's check, since she had no I.D. The bank said they would take a print out of a non state I.D., but she had to sign it over to my husband to cash it since she had no bank account. Naively, she signed it over, and they cashed it. We got $400 for rent and it was done, or so I thought. Wednesday of the next week my husbands paycheck was direct deposited as usual. But at around 6 PM suddenly there was a reversal for said cashed check for $1450.00 plus fees. The bank said it had been altered, and now we are liable for cashing it at our bank on our account. We do not but or sell items on Craigslist or any other website for that matter and were clueless as to how crafty these scammers are. I always thought a cashier's check was like cash! Apparently, cash is cash and that is that. Needless to say we contacted said "friends" who no longer stay with us about the check. They told us to shut up and that is was not thier problem, nor their fault!
So, now we are in really big financial trouble. We basically never got any rent money at all, and paid them $1450 to live here! My husbands pay check was taken by the bank, we have nothing! Plus food, toilet paper, etc. etc. etc., basic living expenses. Every single penny donated would be saving our lives right now. My car will be repossessed soon, and I will no longer be in compliance with the agreement to get caught up with rent to my landlord, and possibly get evicted without your help. We are good people, who were just trying to help a family with a baby during a tough time. All it did was make our lives harder! I won't stop being a giving person because some are so heartless! We will make it through this! But we need your support! I would be forever indebted to any of you who take the time to read this and help our family, so that someday I can help someone again too! I have learned a valuable and horrible lesson in this, about scammers, bad friends, and those who are the greatest friends. I appreciate every red cent, because I know what it's like to work 6 days out of 7 days, and 55 hrs a week, to support my family. Please send what you can afford. We love and honor each of you.
