Transportation for Self Maintanence

Donation protected
Hare Krishna,

I am writing this on behalf of Apurva Prabhu and Mother Kamalini, despite their hesitation, to ask for help for them. They are kind devotees who have always made it a priority to be there for others. Presently our small family of three is living with them in their home, and we’ve been here to witness the unfortunate events they have endured regarding transportation for self-maintenance.

They are without, and are desperately in need of a car, as there is no public transportation where we live. Sincere devotees dedicated to serving Krishna and taking care of His devotees, they have a meager, limited income, and therefore I am reaching out to our vast community of friends and well-wishers. Any help for them will be greatly appreciated.

Apurva and Kamalini have folded their hands to Krishna and are reconciled to being immobile, except for occasional rides from friends to go shopping, to the Temple, and book distribution when possible. Mother Kamalini has been distributing Srila Prabhupada’s books for the past 43 years and this has been a key part of their maintenance, one that has been impacted due to their being completely dependent on rides. However as being able to depend on rides is questionable in the near future, we are launching this effort to help take care of them. Our goal is to find them something reliable that can trustingly last them at least several years.

Anyone inclined to read about the unfortunate occurrences of the past few weeks, please see below.

They have been spending some time in New Vrindavana, where Apurva Prabhu has been cooking in their large kitchen for their various festivals, where he tests recipes for a quantity cookbook he is working on in collaboration with Kurma Prabhu, who sent him 200 of his recipes.

While returning home to North Carolina on June 18th after the 50 hour kirtan, the water pump on their van, which they only had for only 6 weeks, died and the van was towed to a mechanic in Princeton, WV. He informed them that the engine was destroyed and would cost $2500, plus labor for a new engine. This was well beyond their means.

It was already after closing time at the shop, so the mechanic drove them to a nearby motel for the night. Kamalini was anxious to return home because she was scheduled to work with her daughter at one of the summer camps for children that they conduct.

The next morning Apurva walked two miles to the shop and was informed by the mechanic that he had for sale a 1992 Mitsubishi Station Wagon in “good condition” with only 105k miles on it for $1800. They asked for a discount since the air conditioner didn’t work (and it was 95 degrees Fahrenheit). He agreed to $1500, which was their total earnings.

They made it home OK, but four days later the front end of the car started vigorously shaking when accelerating over 40 mph. Apurva took it to a local mechanic and was told that the front axle was about to collapse, that the undercarriage was totally rusted from 26 years of winters, and that there would certainly be trouble down the road. The entire vehicle would have been less than $500 at an honest rate. With their savings now entirely drained and living in a rural farm town without public transportation, they are dependent on the ability of other devotees to give them transportation for basic maintenance. Kindly help these devotees who until now have made it their priority to help others.
