Veterans and Their Pets - Bike Tour
My name is Harold Palmquist. For the past few months I have been homeless. During this time, as a USAF Veteran, I received assistance from Veterans and Their Pets www.vetsandtheirpets.org to foster my dog Daisy while I moved into CASS (a homeless shelter for Veterans).
Two weeks into my stay at CASS, my father fell ill with kidney cancer. I packed up, and with the transportation arranged by Veterans and Their Pets, made my way back to California with Daisy to be by my father’s side. He passed away with all of his family at his side.
My homeless status has proved a blessing in disguise, as now I will "return the favor" and bicycle across America for Veterans and Their Pets www.vetsandtheirpets.org and myself. My mission is to spread the word to local shelters, rescues and Veterans organizations along the way of the issues facing Veterans with pets. Many Veterans stay in harm’s way, fail to seek medical assistance and remain homeless because of the lack of support for their pet while they seek assistance.
The US Government goal of no more homeless Veterans is commendable but, the Government efforts have failed to consider how Veterans with their only love, their pet, would be able to engage the support systems being put in place. They cannot because their pet is not welcome in the programs unless they are a service animal. This is where Veterans and Their Pets provide support. Caring for the Veterans pet while the Veteran gets the care they need.
On my ride I am seeking corporate and private sponsorship for Vets and Their Pets and to raise public awareness for this wonderful organization. Please join me in supporting an organization that saved Daisy and me from the streets and gave me a purpose. Please donate today.
