Vikki's SNS Operation fund
Donation protected
Hi Im Kayla Shepherd . Now seems the perfect time to start this fund for my younger sister Vikki. As many of you already know Vikki has many conditions which affect her quality of life greatly, she has been suffering in and out of hospitals now for many years. On two of these occasions she has been in Intensive care placed into an induced coma. Some of her conditions include Fibromyalgia, ME, seizure disorder and Fowlers syndrome. All of which there is little or no cure for. She is currently in Manchester hospital with one of the conditions. The reason for setting up this fund in particular is for the Fowlers syndrome. To explain briefly almost three years ago she was admitted to a&e as she very suddenly could not pass urine so "temporarily" had a catheter inserted. Over the weeks it was attempted to be removed but her bladder would not respond normally and subsequently had a permanent tube placed through her abdomen into her bladder .Eventually after visiting a specialist in Manchester and undergoing numerous tests she was diagnosed with Fowlers syndrome.Fowlers syndrome is a rare condition that affects mainly young women and is even very widely unfamiliar to alot of doctors. The condition affects the nervous system and, causes either partial or complete retention of the bladder. There is an operation to treat this which can permanently remove the need for a catheter called 'Sacral nerve stimulation' .The operation involves placing a pace maker into her back with wires tied to the sacral nerves at her tailbone .A trial operation to see if she would be a suitable candidate for this was successful but Vikki has been waiting for this for over two years now, not only having the embarrassment of needing a catheter at such a young age but constantly having severe bladder and kidney infections which make her very poorly and in and out of hospital for IV antibiotics. Vikki's permanent infections and persistant need for antibiotics have caused her body to become resistant to most antibiotics , therfore she continues to get more poorly each infection she gets and is at high risk of getting kidney stones/ reduced kidney function and sepsis. Vikki is still currently on a waiting list for the operation and despite phoning numerous times we have no idea of when this will happen.Vikki has the capacity to become even more poorly before the operation day comes hence resorting to this . I came up with the idea of having the treatment privately so we did a little research and found out that she could have it done in as little as 2 weeks time but the cost privately would be around £13,000! Giving Vikki the opportunity to have this operation at the earliest availability would make a massive difference to her quality of life. Obviously this is a lot of money and if I had it would give her every penny. I am setting up this fund to raise any amount towards it as anything would help. Whether this is a small donation or someone organising a fund raising day, sponsored event anything would be much appreciated. We are in the process of arranging a sponsored walk ourselves and further information regarding this will be released as soon as we have it. Thankyou in advance for taking the time to read this and helping Vikki .
