Moose Attack Victim

On May 22nd, 2017, my wife Melissa was attacked by a moose while out walking our two dogs. We live in Eagle River, Alaska, and we’ve walked the well-used bike path she was on for the past 17 years. It was one of the first beautiful days of spring. She came out of a tunnel and accidentally stepped between a moose and her two calves. As she let go of the two dogs, the moose charged and knocked her to the ground. It went away, but she could hear it snorting. It came back two more times, kicking and stomping her. After the third attack, Teddy, our brave little Shitzu, returned to lay on top of her. He couldn’t do much, but he could do that.

Melissa suffered eighteen broken ribs, a punctured lung, deep lacerations on her leg, and horrible bruises all over her body. After getting out of ICU, she spent a few days in surgical care. Her condition worsened and she was sent back to ICU. Today she’s on a ventilator. She has pneumonia and pockets of fluid pressing on her right lung.

Melissa did not deserve this. She’s a deeply caring person, loved by so many people.

Four years earlier, almost to the day, she gave me her kidney. She saved my life, and now I’m trying to do everything I can to ease her burden. We are a small family—her, me and our two dogs. I love my Mel so much.

She has a long, painful road to recovery, both mentally and physically. The medical costs are exceedingly high, and insurance only partially covers the costs. It is with great difficulty that I ask for assistance. Thank you.
