Help Ly Chhay study Political Economy in Hongkong!

Situation:

I am incredibly excited and blessed that I have been accepted for a summer program,Asia Institute for Political Economy (AIPE) in Hong Kong funded by The Fund of American Studies. They have awarded me 3000 USD scholarship. However, I still need roughly around 2000 USD more to cover the cost of the program, visa, air fare, and other necessary expense. I would be really happy and thankful if you could help me with this.

My Story:

My Background:

Being born and raised in a fishing village in rural Cambodia, I am the first girl in my village who has had the opportunity to attend university and study abroad. My uncle had always questioned my belief in education because I am a girl and was born in a poor family. He told me, “no matter how much you learn from school, at the end of the day, you will still be in the kitchen and become a housewife”. Despite criticism, I still can manage to get an education. Although my family could not financially support me with my education, they always supported me and encouraged me to grow stronger and taught me to work hard for my education. Though my mom can’t read, she wanted me to be educated. She knows how difficult life is without education. My dad cries with excitement when he sees me strong, brave, and speaking confidently in front of people.

My life at AUW:

I strongly believe my education is the only way that can bring changes in my life and the lives that surround me. Therefore, I never allowed the challenges and hardships to let me down, but instead I took those challenges as an opportunity to grow.Currently, I am studying at Asian University for Women in Chittagong, Bangladesh, majoring in Politics, Philosophy, and Economics (PPE) and minoring in Development Studies. I am also a member of Student Government Body representing my second year batch mates. My main role is to help my friends voice their decisions and interests to the related department.I was also involved with social activities throughKhmer Youth Association, an organization that believes in youth potential. Through this NGO, I got connected with Wedu, an NGO that empowers young women to become leaders in their home country.I have learned a lot to develop my leadership potential and inspire others.

My Future plan:

I am really interested in working as a politician in Cambodia because I want to reform the education system so that everyone can have the opportunity to get education. I suffered a lot because I did not have money to attend extra-classes. In most cases, only the rich can study whatever they want. I want to eliminate corruption in education system in Cambodia.

Why I want to go to attend this program in Hongkong?

Through this opportunity, I will have the chance to expand my networks by meetingwith amazing people including guest lecturers, prominent academics, diplomats, government officials, and business leaders. I believe attending this program will equip me with skills of analyzing and debating about political economy. Thus, AIPE will be an exciting and invaluable experience for me that will allow me to engage and improve my intellectual, diplomatic, and communication and leadership skills. The knowledge and experience I will acquire at AIPE will enable me to pursue my aspirations to make a difference and change the world positively.

Also, Hong Kong is the ideal place to learn more because of its geography, politics, and people. I really want to experience my life in modern Hong Kong which will help me to see the world froma different perspective and inspire me to try harder for myself and my community.

Why should you donate?

When you help me, you are not only helping one person, you are indeed helping a thousand people who do not have the voice. The world needs more young women leaders, so I can be one of them. You never know how large of an impact your contribution can have in changing the life of others. I am here in my university getting higher education, not because my family can support me, but because of other people. This program in Hong Kong as well, without your support I would not be able to make it.

I am thus thankful to every one of you who are reading this campaign and helping me. I would be beyond grateful and blessed to have your support.

Thank you very much in advance!

Sincerely yours,

Ly Chhay
