Walk on the Mountain

“This isn’t our way of life, our system of capitalism, of exponential growth gone horribly, horribly wrong, this is our system of life and government and everything else gone horribly, horribly right. Horribly according to plan.” -Junior Walk
Deep in the heart of Coal Country in Naoma, West Virginia, Junior Walk, an anti-coal activist, speaks out against Mountaintop Removal to save his home of Coal River Mountain, the last intact mountain in the Coal River Watershed. Walk has become a vigilante, protesting surface mining at The Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) rallies, and regularly using his ATV to monitor mining sites to ensure they abide by the regulations; he has even used his body to barricade roads to headquarters of coal companies. His actions have made him a pariah in a town where most residents livelihoods depend on coal.
Coal has impacted this town not only financially, but in regards to health and the environment; black lung, cancers, and birth defects are common occurrences, in addition to natural and drinking water being contaminated by dust-particles uncovered by mining and chemicals used as explosives for mining as well. Though his life he has been threatened numerous times by residents of his own community, walk only cares about getting mining shut down, and will do whatever it takes to accomplish his mission.
We are 3 Point Productions, a student documentary production crew from Ithaca College, in central New York. We are currently producing a 15-minute film about Walk, but we need your help to tell the story. Your contributions will fund travel expenses to southern West Virginia, lodging, food, equipment needs, and costs to submit to film festivals.
We are forever grateful not only to receive contributions to fund our film, but for your support as well. Every dollar and “share” of this project counts.
Thank you,
