Black History & College Tour

Destination:  Atlanta, GA; Birmingham and Montgomery, AL

Travel Dates:  April 15-19, 2019

Impact on Students: The trip will provide WREC students with an opportunity to go explore the history of Africa and African Americans in America.  It will help ensure all students that participate, especially students of color, increase their own self-awareness, self-identity, and self-confidence.

Connections to Post-secondary choices & the general education curriculum:

This trip will help to extend learning outside of the classroom for our 10th and 11th grade students. It will help bring to life the knowledge that our students are learning in their World Cultures and Humanities classes. Furthermore, the trip will continue to promote the college going and college persistence message to our students. By attending the college tours and meeting with collegiate level students of color our WREC students have the chance to imagine themselves on these campuses in the future.

This trip will begin with a tour of the civil rights era in Atlanta, Birmingham, and Montgomery.  While in Atlanta, students will visit the King Center for Non-Violent Change and the Center for Civil and Human Rights.  Students will also experience first hand the Antebellum era with a tour of Stone Mountain Park.  Students will tour 3 Historically Black Colleges and Universities; Morehouse College, Spelman College, and Clark Atlanta University.

In Birmingham, students will visit the historic Sixteenth Street Baptist Church and The Birmingham Civil Rights Institute.  In Montgomery, the students will visit the Legacy Museum and the National Memorial for Peace and Justice.
