Wheelchair Funding Emergency

Emergency Help Needed to Fund a Wheelchair

My son’s 10 year old wheelchair now needs to be replaced. The firm it came from no longer produces wheelchairs following the loss of their contract with the Norwegian government.

Because he has Spinal Muscular Atrophy and a spinal curvature that means he has additional needs for any wheelchair to be comfortable and useable.

He needs a special seating system, a reclining back and a specially shaped seat. An NHS voucher will not cover any of these extra costs and is likely to be for about £1,250 only. It is also impossible to find out how long he'd have to wait for an assessment for this although in some parts of the country people are waiting 3-5 years for an assessment.

An additional problem is the chair needs to be a similar design and size to the one he has now so that he can continue to drive from his wheelchair in his adapted vehicle. If he cannot continue to do this then he would not be able to come home to even visit us as we live in a rural village without public transport.

Although I hate to have to ask people who I know have little money for help even £1 would be gratefully received.

Any money raised and not needed for a replacement wheelchair would be donated to the DPAC fighting fund.
