Ashley is a 22 year old who's been battling with cancer since the age of 18. In such a short amount of time she has gone through more than anyone ever should in a lifetime.
At just 18 years old Ashley started experiencing pain in her knee, and thinking nothing of it she went to the Moncton hospital for a check up. They did a biopsy on her knee and just a few days later she was on a train to Montreal. Turns out she had osteosarcoma (bone cancer). She stayed in Montreal for a few weeks, then returned back to Moncton, then was shipped off to the IWK in Halifax. She underwent surgery on her knee, removing the half of her knee cap, and her femur. She stayed at the IWK for months recovering from the surgery - bedridden and getting many different kinds of chemotherapy, meanwhile facing other health issues (I.e. water in the lungs requiring yet another surgery, blood transfusions).
Since she was bedridden for so long, she became so weak in her legs she could no longer walk. Luckily with the help of physiotherapy and her own strong will, she was able to gain the strength and ability to walk again.
Not only was Ashley dealing with her health, but also during the middle of her treatments she lost her father in a tragic motorcycle accident. This man was not only her father, but he was also her best friend and biggest support. Dealing with the loss of her father made her treatments come to a pause. After 2 years of stress, sadness and struggle, her life began again.
At the age of 20 Ashley thought she was cancer free and finally felt well enough to start working again. She had also started attending Eastern College taking Interior Design, and working out at the gym to gain muscle mass back. A few months into working & going to school she met cancer once again, this time finding out she had lymphoma. She had to stop school and work, and began the war of cancer once again.
Her body became so weak that it could no longer handle anymore chemo or radiation, forcing her to make the biggest decision of her life. Continue with destroying her body with chemo - not guaranteeing that it would do the job it was supposed to and increasing her chance of death - or receive a bone marrow transplant. She decided to go ahead with the bone marrow transplant, which she received in July 2014.
Since having the bone marrow transplant Ashley hasn't been able to catch a break. She is still suffering with graft vs host disease, leading to avascular necrosis in both her hips and shoulders (which will require replacement surgery for both) and is no longer able to walk once again.
Sadly, Ashley will be heading back to Halifax to stay at the Victoria General hospital on February 1st, for many months. She needs your support so she can have one less stress on her shoulders as she undergoes more surgeries.
I'm asking for your help because she will need financial support to help maintain her bills while she's away. She owns a house that will have to be heated so the pipes don't freeze. Also, she has no other income and I want her to be able to get anything she needs while she's so far from home.
Not only is this girl my best friend, but she is also one of the most caring young ladies who would do anything in her power to put a smile on someone else's face. She has been through so much, but yet is always happy, smiling and cracking jokes. Anyone who has had the pleasure of meeting her, would tell you the same.
Thank you.
