A Van for Heavenly Groceries!!

Donation protected
Hi,

I am a 10-year Army veteran who is also a student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. I am involved in volunteering in this great community and helping those in need.

The Jackson Center for Saving and Making History is an organization dedicated to helping the less fortunate in the Chapel Hill, North Carolina community. Here is their mission statement: http://www.jacksoncenter.info/about-us/visionmission/

I know you get a lot of requests for charities, but I’m hoping you can spare $5 or even $1. My service learning class, ENGL 271: Mixed Race America, is partnered with a community organization, the Jackson Center. One of the many projects they help run is Heavenly Groceries, a food bank located in the basement of St. Joseph’s church (on Rosemary Street in the Northside neighborhood). They are in dire need of a new van—which is critical because they use this van everyday to pick up food from local grocery stores (Food Lion, Harris Teeter, Trader Joes). The van they have is literally on its last legs (you can’t even move the seats anymore). We think we can get them a used van for $5,000.

Heavenly Groceries feeds hungry people in our community and is one of the only area food banks that allows clients to choose their food, allowing them dignity through food choice (which includes fresh produce, bread, desserts, and meat).

You can read more about our class’s efforts through this Daily Tar Heel article here: http://www.dailytarheel.com/article/2015/10/unc-class-raises-money-for-heavenly-groceries

The original idea was to get 5,000 people to donate a dollar, but Go Fund Me has a minimum donation of $5. Which is a little bit more than a tall soy caramel macchiato or about 2 black coffees. If you can go without either, we’d love $5 for the Jackson Center to have a new-used van.

The community will be extremely thankful for your donations!

Please help us achieve our goal!

Thank you very much!
