Wombling BVI - post Irma recovery

Wombling BVI

This page is to support the BVI Wombles, a new project to help clean up the BVI and support other good causes in the islands hit by the unforgiving wrath of Hurricane Irma.

Months on and  the devastation is still ongoing. The trees are now looking green but behind the lush vegetation are houses without roofs, boarded up windows, smashed up cars and boats, and piles of debris.

If even a gentle breeze made a little bit of mess in their neighbourhood, the Wombles would be out in force and picking it up. If you didn't grow up in the UK (and/or are much younger than me) then you may not know what a Womble is. They are fictional furry creatures which live on Wimbledon Common in London, who pick up litter and like recycling. Watch a clip on Youtube. We can learn a lot from them.

The first project is to get together a team of volunteer Wombles for weekend Wombling sessions. Money will initially be spent on equipment to help Wombles safely pick up litter, debris and the general scattered detritus and safely dispose of it. A simple aim is to make areas safe for kids to play.  We are also looking at other projects. There is a lot to do and a lot of people who need help.  We are working with recycling projects in the BVI to make sure that the litter doesn't all go up in smoke.

I am working with my friend Murray Laing who has already raised a lot of money for good causes in the BVI. Please read his very moving story here, and feel free to donate to his page instead:

So far this year we have had two very successful Wombling sessions, at Cane Garden Bay and Soper's Hole. We are next Wombling on 29 March 2018 at Brewer's Bay (8am - 11am) in association with the BVI Spring Regatta.

On 14 April 2018, I am running the Tortola Torture to raise money for the BVI Wombles: A 54K ultramarathon on Tortola in the British Virgin Islands with only 22% on the flat, the rest on hot and humid hills with 12,000 feet of elevation change. (http://tortolatorture.com/) Phew! All donations much appreciated.
