Who is Mers-Bodjar?
MERS-Bodjar is a rural organisation for the development of socio-economic activities for women of the Biombo Region in Guinea-Bissau. It was established in February 2000. The aim of the organisation is to give support to agri-women in their production as well empowerment in the activities that will aid the various aspects of their lives socially and economically.
The project was funded solely by the women via an "abota" where the 300 members contributed and raised enough funds to get the project going. The main objectives of the project is to contribute to alleviate the physical effort and to improve the social, political and economic position of the women. Whenever possible the women gather and educate each other on issues surrounding agriculture as well as raising the awareness on subjects such as: division of labour in the home, importance of education of girls and boys and gender based violence, to name a few.
