The "Wonder" Project
Donation protected
Greetings! I have been a pediatrician in Long Beach for the past twenty years. I am also the father of a sixth grader. In addition, I am a new member of the Signal Hill Rotary Club.
To make the lives of children a little better, I am leading a project to get the book "Wonder" to every fifth grader in Long Beach, California. Two years ago, I sponsored my son's class to get "Wonder" to every student, but I want to expand that effort to the entire Long Beach Unified School District.
I first read "Wonder" with my son in 2014, and I was inspired by the powerful message about kindness in the book. Furthermore, the strength the these fictional characters also helps to establish an anti-bullying culture in schools. I also believe in supporting a home literacy program. Getting "Wonder" to every fifth grade student is a good way to start accomplishing all these goals.
There are 54 elementary schools in the district, and this project will provide 36 books per school. I am working with the assistant superintendent in coordinating this project. I have also incorporated the book into the Common Core ELA curriculum with a classroom kit for the teachers.
I am currently funding this project myself, but it is an enormous financial commitment. I am hoping you can contribute to the cause to allay part of the financial burden.
Please consider donating toward this worthy cause. Not only will you be inspiring young minds with this book, you'll be helping all of us to reach a better future where peace and kindness triumph over hate and ignorance.
