Wonthaggi LSC Bay Beach Redevelopment
AUTUMN STORM DESTROYS WONTHAGGI LIFE SAVING CLUBHOUSE
Friday 10 May 2019 can only be summed up as gut wrenching and devastating for the Wonthaggi LSC and the local community.
At 9.30am an intense localised storm cell passing through the state’s southeast which brought more than 135mm of rain and an extensive Hail storm turning the sands white looking more like the snow fields than the beach .
The drainage system was unable to cope with the deluge, which, rather than letting water escape, let more water into the park. The force of the rushing water stripped bricks away from the hall, blew concrete drain covers clear off, washed away access into the park and washed away a significant quantity of sand from the foundations of the building.
This has left the members of the Wonthaggi Life Saving Club struggling for solutions as our lifesaving patrol tower and clubhouse have suffered significant damage and we are preparing to abandon them both as they are unsafe to access.
As people who have attend the scene tell us, that the pictures do not show the true force of the rushing water and devastation caused.
We need your help and support to rebuild not only the lifesaving club but surrounding infrastructure as part of the Cape Paterson Bay Beach redevelopment.
Please donate and share our updates on Facebook to spread the word and help us make the bay beach great again!
