Lighting The World Peace Flame

One Flame, Uniting People, Worldwide.
The historic, international lighting ceremony of the World Peace Flame took place on Friday, Sept. 21, the United Nations International Day of Peace. The inspired, full-of-grace journey of the World Peace Flame is a powerful story of a girl from Hong Kong, Irene Kai, persevering against all odds and igniting our community with a powerful opportunity for unity and healing. Please see the video of the lighting ceremony below!
The World Peace Flame was lit by Savitri MacCuish, executive director of the World Peace Flame Foundation, and Linda Schott, president of Southern Oregon University. Savitri and a delegation flew in from The Hague, Netherlands, Switzerland, and Australia to light the flame. Letters of support from Oregon Governor Kate Brown and U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley were read at the ceremony, and in attendance were Grandma Agnes Pilgrim, Chairwoman of the International Thirteen Indigenous Grandmothers; Dan Wahpepah, founder of Red Earth Descendants; Oregon State Rep. Pam Marsh, mayors of the cities of Ashland and Eugene, Oregon; and Kelly Raymond, Ashland School District superintendent. We have come to the final stage of this fundraising journey thanks to so many people who have stood up and said, "Yes, unity and peace are essential for our well being. I support the inspiration and guidance that will come from the World Peace Flame, now, and for future generations."
Less than $2000 is all that is needed now. Please take a moment as a peacebuilder and provide a donation, and ask a friend or family member to help also.
The need for strength, unity, inspiration, and positive action is very clear. Make the World Peace Flame Monument part of your legacy. Thank you!

Take a stand with people locally and around the world for unity, justice, peace, and inspiration. It is time, and we can do this together. Positive action is in our hands!
Thanks to the generosity of many people whose hearts are already being touched by the World Peace Flame we are making real progress. Through a benefit concert, silent auction, business sponsorships, and individual donors our fundraising goal is much closer. Bringing the World Peace Flame to the United States and its perpetual home in Ashland, Oregon now needs $11,000, including the $2,888 that this GoFundMe campaign has already raised, so just a little over $8000 left to go. Please consider making a donation—or a booster gift for those of you who have already given—now. And please share this GoFundMe campaign with your friends and networks using the "Share” button at the top of this page, and a personal note of your own.
This is an investment for inspiring unity, justice, healing, and peace now, and for future generations. This is a positive action that is in our hands. Thank you for your generosity, at any level.

Discovery and Journey of the World Peace Flame
On September 2015, Irene Kai, co-founder of the Ashland Culture of Peace Commission (ACPC) toured the Snowdonia National Park in Wales with her daughter. Deep in the Snowdonia Mountains, by grace, they came across the World Peace Flame Monument. They were told the history of the World Peace Flame: in 1999, seven sacred flames from five continents were flown to Wales and united into one eternal flame. The Asian flame was lit from the eternal flame at Gandhi’s memorial. Irene was offered a candle lit from the World Peace Flame to bring back to Ashland, Oregon. She was touched by the presence of the flame and deeply inspired by its symbol of peace and unity, she was moved to bring the World Peace Flame Monument to Ashland.
After three years of hard work and some serendipity, Barry and Kathryn Thalden invited ACPC to install the World Peace Flame in the obelisk at the Thalden Pavilion at the Southern Oregon University Sustainability Center. In order to accommodate the World Peace Flame, the original design of the obelisk needs to be modified and the housing for the official World Peace Flame lantern needs to be constructed. We reach out for your support of any size to make the World Peace Flame Monument in Ashland a reality.
This monument will have local, state, national and international significance. As the City of Ashland has proclaimed itself an International City of Peace, the Ashland monument will be known throughout the Cities of Peace all over the world. With ACPC’s connection with the United Nations, the World Peace Flame Monument in Ashland will be known as a beacon of Unity, Healing, Peace, Freedom and Celebration in our nation and in the world.
There are few opportunities in our lifetimes to make contributions which directly impact the aspirations of our daily lives and the lives of future generations, and become a proud part of our own legacy. This need has never been greater than it is right now. Establishing the World Peace Flame Monument in Ashland, Oregon is that opportunity through which we can recognize and work toward our commonalities, rather than our differences. Let us dream together, sail skyward and create a sustainable and peaceful world – One flame uniting people worldwide.
