Quest for Gunner’s New Recruit
Donación protegida
Our K9 Sgt Gunner was recently diagnosed with Degenerative Myelopathy. This disease affects the nerves of the spinal cord which causes gradual loss of mobility, so our favorite guy will likely eventually be paralyzed. While we all are incredibly sad, we have been assured he does not feel any pain, and we are working with his veterinarian on an ongoing care plan for him. He continues to do narcotics work as he is able; however, we are planning on Gunner officially retiring within the next six months. When he retires, Gunner will remain with Sgt Adam Wade and his family; enjoying the remainder of his life as a much-loved family pet.
The K9 unit of any police department is the most visible unit. Gunner has done hundreds of public demonstrations to show the important job of our K9 unit. Our police K9 bridges the gap between Warrensburg Police Department and the community we serve. He does, after all live in the town known for the slogan, “man’s best friend”! In addition to being generally awesome, our K9 plays an important role in battling the influx of drugs into our community and tracking/apprehending criminals. When Gunner retires, it is imperative that we fill his role and continue this important work. Our new K9 will live with Gunner at the Wade home and Sgt. Wade will remain our department K9 handler. While we are disappointed that we will lose Gunner as a patrol dog, we are excited that he will be able to be involved in training of the new department K9, and we know he will be a great big brother to the new recruit!
We are asking for your help! As you can imagine, the cost of a fully trained K9 is very expensive. The average cost of a police K9 is about $20,000 (includes the K9, training and equipment). This is a huge amount of money for a small department the size of Warrensburg, Missouri!
The Warrensburg Police Department is raising funds to help offset the costs associated with purchasing a replacement dual-purpose K9. Dual-purpose means that the K9 has been trained in both narcotics detection and patrol work. Patrol work includes building searches, tracking, locating evidence, handler protection, criminal apprehension, etc. In addition to this Go Fund Me page, if you have a group, company or organization that would like to contribute to our efforts, please contact The Warrensburg Police Department.
We are actively searching for the perfect replacement for K9 Sgt. Gunner and will keep our community informed as we proceed. As mentioned, Gunner will work light duty as long as he is able. You can expect to see him in the community until his doctor determines it’s no longer in his best interest. Please give him an “atta boy!” when you see him. (After his handler says it’s okay!). We want to thank everyone in the community who continues to support us. Now let’s get Gunner a sibling!
