Growing the Dirt Head Farm

Donation protected
Hello,
I am Paul Peter Nielson. I own and operate Dirt Head Farms. The farm was previously Dirt Head Microgreens but we are growing.

The farm itself consists of small plots of under used land in the local Fargo Moorhead area that I (current 1 person operation) will be growing a selection of produce on. The produce will be sold to local restaurants and farmers markets. My previous 2 years of microgreens sales at both markets has given me plenty of experience working with chefs and local food consumers. The goal Dirt Head Farms is to bring farm fresh food to the table with in an urban setting. This is truly local produce.

The funding goal is for the initial startup costs and equipment needed to intensively grow a selection of about 15 different types of produce.

Equipment needed:

Tiller BCS 853 ($4275 new)

Tiller attachment ($528 new)

landscape fabric

tarps x 10 ($45 new)

Flame weeder ($650 new)

low tunnel materials

         Conduit bender

crop bug covers x  ( keep the bugs from eating the tasty produce)

Jang Seeder JP1 ($425 new)
         jang rollers x 8 ($20-30 each)

irrigation systems

                  Drip tape

                  Connectors

                  Hose

                  Hose timers 3x

($425 estimate for enough parts to irrigate 20, 30 in X 30ft rows.)

         High Tunnel ($1500-2000 new)
etc...

These items and more are crucial for starting the urban farm. Eventually the building of a passive heated greenhouse will help extend my season and produce availability.

The season is still a few weeks away so it is getting close to time to get the seeds and starts in the ground. The funding will ensure that Dirt Head Farms will be able to grow enough produce to provide a diverse selection of goods to market this season and seasons to come.

I want to thank everyone who donates or passes this along to other friends and family. The Dirt Head Farm is a dream of mine. As a previous food industry worker (17 plus years in a kitchen) I can tell you local foods are needed in our area. I better way of getting high quality produce to market is available by using under used small open plots of land in our local communities. We don’t need to ship our goods across country to get second-rate quality, lets grow it here.

Thank you so much for looking at the campaign.
