Hello, I am an instructor at Academia Duellatoria, one of the United States West Coast martial arts schools dedicated to teaching HEMA (Historic European Martial Arts). In addition to running one of our two martial arts schools, I also have a background as a tournament promoter. As a historic martial arts school teaching the arts of European Swordplay one of our goals is to continue being an educational force in our community. As such, we put on historical displays at local fairs, conventions, libraries and schools. This often requires we dress the part in historical dress.
HEMA gear, and jacket have unique needs that go beyond standard modern fencing gear. The weapons hit particularly more stout than modern fencing equipment. Modern tournaments for historical weapons have begun developing gear specifically for the developing sport. The Spes jackets (a combination of a modern fencing jacket with changes to the arms based on historical designs) having become somewhat of a standard in many circles. These jackets are expensive, the pro version currentlly runs $417.00 and their lighter standard jacket at $240.00. These jackets are distinctly modern in appearance and seem to only come in black.
Our goal is to work with the maker of the jacket pictured, and develope a fencing jacket with a historical design suitable for modern HEMA competition. In addition this will provide us with fencing gear suitable for wearing at historical educational displays. The jacket is customizable in a variety of colors in heavy linen fabric. This makes it breathable for the fencer, important when you start to heat up. The jackets are made bespoke to the users measurements.
This jacket is based off of a historical fencing jacket dating c.1580 from the collection at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
This campaign will finance purchasing our first jacket (already designed by the maker) customized for colors and materials. We will then use this jacket to suggest changes to improve the jacket for our needs in the HEMA community. The base price of this jacket currently stands at 220 Euros plus customization cost and shipping from Europe.
With the current exchange rates we arrive at our current fundraising goal. Our instructors make little money running the school, funds taken in go to equipment, books, and keeping the doors open and the lights on. Please help us to fund the development of equipment. It's our goal to be able to offer a standard fencing jacket option for our students and anyone else who is interested in this project.... and eliminate the customization charge.
We currently have in development historic pants and shirts designed for the HEMA practitioner and we hope to send these to a manufacturer for development as well.
