I was hired at the Disneyland Resort and started working there on May 20, 2006. Throughout my time there, I faced harassment and discrimination for being transgender. After a series of rather unfortunate events, my employment was terminated on March 14, 2014. My life has been turned inside out, and I've had more sadness than joy.
I had retained the services of an attorney who attempted to negotiate a settlement without going to court, but the Mouse refused to budge. In order to proceed further, the attorney wanted a retainer to pay court fees (e.g. depositions, witness fees, court reporter fees, etc) since she is unable to front that money. She told me to go looking for another attorney or law firm that might be able to do that, and I haven't been successful. These are costs that I'd incur even if I did not retain the services of an attorney. One firm, the lead firm handling Ramirez v. Barnes & Noble Booksellers, et al. in fact, told me that my economic losses were too small to make it worth their while.
Not all transgender women have access to the resources Caitlyn Jenner and Laverne Cox do. Many of us are ordinary people, with ordinary lives. Many are low-income, often due to no fault of their own.
I filed a legal pleading on June 22, 2015 in pro per (self-represented, without an attorney). I'll put a link to it here for everyone's reading pleasure after all parties are served. I hope to be able to raise the money to retain the services of the attorney I was working with before, or perhaps find another attorney before things get too far over my head.
In case anyone's curious, it's case number 30-2015-00794680-CU-WT-CJC and can be found at https://ocapps.occourts.org/civilwebShoppingNS/Login.do. There may be a fee involved to retrieve the information.
