South Africa 2017!

I REQUEST YOUR SUPPORT IN PHASE 2 OF MY
JOURNEY OF DISCOVERY, RESEARCH, SERVICE & EMPOWERMENT!

Thank you to those who so generously gave to Phase 1 of my S. Africa campaign. I'm now in the final stretch and am seeking to generate $750 more to acheive my Phase 2 goal. Every dollar counts, every dollar matters!

Who am I:

My name is Kiana Gandy, a 22 year-old undergrad student at Western Washington University. I am currently a co-captain for the women's basketball team. I am graduating this coming June with my degree in Psychology, after graduation I am taking a gap year before I go back for my Masters in Psychology with an emphasis on Clinical, Social or Industrial/Organizational Psychology.

What I'll be doing:

In August 2017, it's going down! This summer I have the opportunity to travel to one of the most diverse and culturally rich countries on the planet, South Africa! I will be the youngest of 12, traveling with a delegation of 11 other women from July 30th- August 13th, 2017.

I will be traveling to the cities of Johannesburg, George and Cape Town for 14 days of cultural discovery, appreciation and empowerment. While in George, we will also be attending the "Women on the Grow" conference, featuring five of the women in our delegation as the speakers. There will also be a community service aspect of the trip. I will not only have the opportunity of being a tourist in their land, but to be a servant as well, in that I will be participating in a community service project with the delegation.

Relevance to Education:

When I go, I will have just graduated with my Bachelors Degree in Psychology. Thus, I will be looking for ways to use my field of study to compare, contrast, inquire and explore psychological phenomena like systematic racism, environmental racism, categorization and depersonalization. I plan to visit Cape Town University, a school on my short list of places to send in my application for a Masters degree in Psychology.

The rich and unhealed history around social justice in South Africa will be something I plan to research, through critical conversation, observation and visits to pivotal places that hold precious milestones of history. These include Nelson Mandela's home, the Apartheid Museum, Freedom Park and Soweto, a black township that grew under the apartheid system.

Why:

As a young African American woman, I am always looking for new ways to affirm and endorse my identity. That being said, South Africa wouldn't only be a break and reality check from the Westernized culture and beliefs, but it would give me an experience of something much bigger and profound than my U.S. experience.

How you can help:

I am reaching out to you to ask for financial support I am making this momentous trip for me a reality. The trip costs $3,850 and my remaining investment for the 14-day portion of this trip is $3,350. The great news is that I've already gotten started with securing my finances for the trip. I have paid the $500 deposit (Shout out to student refunds!). I am reaching out to you via this letter because I would like to request your help and support. Would you consider contributing anywhere between $10, $25, $50 or $100? Sharing this campaign on Facebook would also be an ideal form of support so please feel free to do so!

I'm looking forward to a transformational trip that powerfully propels me into this next season of my life.
