Volunteering & writing in Lebanon
Donation protected
My name is Lisa Luxx. I am a poet, writer and activist based between Yorkshire and London.
I am going to Lebanon in December 2017 for 2+ weeks to volunteer with an NGO called Hostel Beirut. This will mean teaching arts and english classes to Syrian refugee children and teenagers.
As a half Syrian woman, it feels as if I have direct responsibility to offer myself to the current crisis. This journey is the first step toward understanding how I can best be of use.
Education is a means to opportunity. Knowledge will not solve all this worlds problems, but learning of language and creativity gives sight to something bigger than what one already knows. The people I'll be working with are young humans and what they know is a world of extreme violence and war, for they have experienced more of that than peace. If our government will not allow them the dignity to survive and thrive here, then we need to find different ways as individuals to offer new worlds.
I'll be working in the refugee neighbourhood Shatila, which homes many displaced Syrian people. As a storyteller, with a platform to share truths, I also wish to use this opportunity to ~ consensually ~ collect stories I can translate into poetry. Poems that may give western audiences a better view of the tragedies playing out, and portraits of the real life heroes effected. To also raise global awareness of Syria lost, not just as a lamentation of destruction but also as a celebration of what was.
As a full-time independent artist, it will be challenging to fund this whole journey alone. I have accomodation, flights and sustenance costs to cover. Any contribution that you can make will mean everything to me. The more money I have, the more time I can give. But the sooner I can collect financial input the better, as I am set to be there in winter and around Christmas, when other volunteers are less likely to go.
I will send updates for those who donate, and more importantly - thank you: for believing in me, and for believing in new worlds.
With light,
Lisa Minerva Luxx
This is Hostel Beirut. I will be sharing a dorm here and they set up my volunteering. We have been in contact on e-mails: http://hostelbeirut.com/volunteer/
