I Yelena Akhterov, am a married immigrant from Ukraine. I have three wonderful children, one of which is attending Sacramento State; the other two are attending elementary and middle school. For our whole lives, me and my husband have been tirelessly working in order to provide the best possible life for our beloved children.
Our issue started in June of 2014. I felt a small lump on my arm, however due to financial reasons (our son was just starting college) and naievity, we did not see a doctor. By July of 2015 that lump grew even larger, and I began to experience crippling pain in my back. When this occured we decided to seek medical attention. I was prescribed massages and medication, however I was unable to stop working during this time due to our financial needs.
The pain did not go away, and I was reffered for an MRI. It was only after this that we learned that the lump had metastasized. During the 3 weeks that I had to wait for an appointment the pain grew so severe that I became unable to sit upright.
The oncologist I was with immediately transfered me to emergency treatment, and I soon discovered that I had stage 4 breast and bone cancer. When I was asked if I wanted to continue living I had to answer yes, for the sake of my children.
I began radiation therapy and taking medication. I went through 16 radiation treatments and over 21 chemical treatments. My doctor said that I will need to continue these treatments for life.
Since 2016 I have undergone 3 more surgeries.
During this time my husband has not been able to work much, since he has to take our children to school, drive me to and from appointments, as well as manage the household mostly by himself.
All our savings have been used up on rent and food.
I ask from the bottom of my heart for your help. Our family will forever be in the debt of anyone who helps us. Thank you, and may God bless you.
