Pam's Liver Transplant Expenses

April, 2016: 5 months after liver transplant.

November 4, 2015: 7 days before liver transpant.

Hello, my name is Pam Herring Morgan, and I would like to share with you my blessed journey through life that has brought me to where I am today: a very grateful, recent liver transplant recipient. I am a wife of 42 years, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother.

I have been so hesitant about starting this GoFundMe account partly because of my desire to keep my medical issues private, and one of the hardest things to do is to ask for money. David and I have worked many 70-90 hours per week to try and make a comfortable life for our family, but that ended in tragedy in April, 2000 when David was the victim of a hit and run accident while on the job. As a result, the accident left him 100% disabled with only S.S. disability compensation until age 65. I have not worked since October and have been told not expect to return for approximately 1 year. Unfortunately, this employment issue is the reason that I am reaching out for financial help. Any amount will go towards the already billed amount to the insurance company of $528,600 just for the transplant itself and about that same amount of $500,000 for doctors, medical supplies, medicines, emergency procedures while in the hospital. These figures do not include the cost of having the shoulder repaired now that I am stable enough.

In 2003, I was diagnosed with Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis (PSC), a rare disease of the bile duct, which carries the bile to the liver. If the bile duct isn’t flowing properly, the liver becomes diseased and in most cases goes into liver failure. I rocked along and worked full time for 12+ years hoping and praying that I would never experience liver surgery, because I didn’t feel “bad”, needless to say PSC is also called a “silent killer”.

In October 2015, those dreaded words “liver transplant” rang out to me when I fell breaking my collar bone, and 2 days later a blood vessel in my spleen ruptured, landing me in the ER for an emergency surgery to stop the bleeding into my abdomen. This started the immediate need for a liver transplant because the liver was going into failure due to the large hematoma that had formed in my abdomen. I received the new liver on November 11, 2015, and we could not be more grateful to the donor family, the doctors, nurses, and all who made the “Gift of Life” possible. We stayed in Dallas for 64 days and with God’s grace, and the prayers from family, friends and our wonderful Church family all making a “circle of Angels”, we got to come home on December 30th.  After being home for 2 months I was back at Baylor Hospital being treated for a viral infection. The doctors have told us that this is something that I will have to deal with forever because my auto immune system is compromised due to the anti-rejection medications I take daily.

What we have gone through is nothing short of a blessed miracle, but it does come at a cost, much more than were quoted in 2003!  Life goes on when you are at home but with 2/3’s less income and the extraordinary amount of medical bills. This is going to be an ongoing financial battle for us until we both can secure some type of employment, which hopefully will be sooner than later.

Having been blessed beyond imagination for receiving the Gift of Life, we have now become advocates for organ donation (https://www.donatelifetexas.org/) and PSC awareness (http://pscpartners.org/ ), and would love to share our experience and information with you. Again, we thank you all from the bottom of our hearts for your prayers, kindness, and comfort shown to us. Your continued prayers and any other assistance will be greatly appreciated to help us along the rest of our journey.

May God Bless You All,

Pam and David
